How about just clarifying the position on escooters. They are not going anywhere, better to properly regulate them than what ever is going on now.
Can’t we just use our Great British Common Sense^tm ? They do seem to pick and choose when to apply *liberal principals*.
Edit: and also
> She said later that the regulations in the government’s current e-scooter trial already state that is an offence to use a handheld mobile phone while operating one. Rule-breakers could be fined and get six penalty points, she added.
🤦♂️
They should properly enforce banning drivers using mobile phones first.
I’ve seen 5 drivers in the last few days using mobile phones whilst driving without a care in the world because they think they can get away with it.
And they are the ones in control of a 1 ton vehicle which can do a lot more damage to other people around them.
I’m not saying cyclists are innocent. Just that the behaviour of drivers is quite often worse.
Uggghhh…
I despair.
This is a nothing idea because it is not based in data, facts or reality. The reason that cars are required not to use phones is that **they are big one Tonne metal death machines**. Even the smallest car going relatively slowly can kill several people.
And here’s the kicker – they DO kill people.
**Every 22 minutes someone is killed or seriously injured on the road**. Around 1500-1700 deaths annually.
About 2 of those on average are Cyclists/pedestrian collisions.
>if our goal is to improve road safety – in seeking to penalise cyclists we are going after the wrong villain
Must be a joke right? How many cyclists have you seen on there phone while riding on the road. Maybe I’ve seen one or 2 in my life time.
Ban Tory peers whether they’re using phones or not, cyclists and e-scooter riders urge.

>a law change so cyclists are prosecuted for the offence of using a phone, in the same way that car drivers are.
But car drivers aren’t prosecuted. I see it *all the time.*
Or you could just go after people when they hurt someone, like they do in the Netherlands, where bikes and pedestrians have shared spaces since the 70s and people don’t seem to be dying left right and centre?
How the fuck can you ban Scooter uses from using mobile phones, when you’ve very stupidly ensured that it’s only legal to use one through a mobile phone app?
build proper cycling infrastructure first then we can start talking about following rules.
Attempts at more culture war shit or just a regular out of touch tory peer? Hard to tell.
Anyway, it’s already illegal to do that. Banning something illegal isn’t going to do much.
escooters just should be banned full stop they are literally causing death and mayhem on the roads and pavements. But drug dealers love the fast and quite
2 tons of car/van moving at potentially 100+mph is vastly more dangerous than a scooter or bike.
While there’s some hazard to pedestrians, a distracted or drunk cyclist or scooter-rider doing 10-20mph on a ~20kg machine is very unlikely to seriously injure anybody but themselves.
without fail if I see some mad cyclist go by me using their phone I go “what the fuck”, not quietly. Why is this even a thing? You can fuck yourself up even if you’re really vigilant riding a bike!
I’m sure this happens but what I see more is drivers with wireless headphones in while driving. Surely we need a bigger campaign about that then people on scooters.
Most road cyclists I see are hardcore cyclists wearing bright clothing and complying with road traffic laws. Typically the cyclists I would be most cagey about are riding on the path anyway.
So they’ll focus on law changes if they directly experience a problem. Forget the cost of living crisis we’re going through, old dear nearly gets hit by a scooter so we need legislation changes.
Think we just need to make sure the tories experience every issue we face on a daily basis and maybe they’ll do something about it.
No more laws until you enforce the ones you already passed!
Just ban E-Scooters. The ratio of twats to safe is very skewed because it seems it’s mostly twats who believe that they can go full pelt without giving a shit about people walking. I’ve almost been ran over by one and if i hadn’t noticed at the last moment, that twat would have crashed into me. I was walking across the road. That and it seems that e-scooters don’t require licenses, little to no regulations. Idiots swerve in and out of people and can do a lot of damage if they crash into someone.
Fine OK, but can we just use our own e-scooter then before you start making up restrictions
Have you tried using a mobile on a scooter, it’s not like you can use your knees to steer while you are typing FFS.
I’d like to think our country is smart enough NOT to use mobile phones while cycling, but deep down I know they aren’t.
I support this
Know what makes road users electing to use a mobile device while operating a vehicle so despicable?
Unlike drink drivers, you are sober. You actively make a decision to use that device and in doing so fuck off the well-being of anybody else around you, as well as the resources/manpower put to task when you inevitably run out of luck and have an accident.
High time it started being treated with the same level of contempt as drink drivers because even when you run some poor sod down sentencing is a bad joke.
I have a loved one living out the remainder of their life in a care home because of someone who mowed them down on a pedestrian crossing, not even very old, faculties intact but can’t even wipe their own arse. Months spent in hospital. By time they were discharged into care, culprit was already back on the road.
I watched young girl and boyfriend on an escooter late last night driving down the road her arms spread singing the titanic tune and missed being young.
Seems like a non-problem to me. I can’t say I’ve ever ridden a bike whilst looking at my phone. To find a picture they even had to find a cyclist NOT riding a bike! Ridding a bike one-handed isn’t very convenient.
Just an example of reactionary motorists looking for a scapegoat.
