Oil prices saw an uptick in early Asian trading on Monday, fueled by a decision from U.S. President Donald Trump to extend the deadline for trade negotiations with the European Union. This development, reported by Reuters, alleviated concerns about potential U.S. tariffs on the EU that could have impacted the global economy and oil demand.

Brent crude futures increased by 37 cents, or 0.6%, reaching $65.15 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose by 34 cents, or 0.6%, to $61.87 a barrel. Market analyst Tony Sycamore from IG noted the positive momentum in crude oil and U.S. equity futures following the announcement.

President Trump agreed to extend the trade talks deadline with the EU until July 9, following a request from Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, for more time to finalize a deal. This extension is expected to influence risk sentiment and crude oil dynamics this week, according to Sycamore.

Additional support for oil prices came from data indicating limited progress in U.S.-Iran nuclear discussions, which reduced fears of increased Iranian oil entering the market. U.S. buyers also moved to cover their positions ahead of the Memorial Day weekend. According to IndexBox, the global oil market is closely watching OPEC+ decisions, as the group may consider increasing their output by 411,000 barrels per day in July.

Furthermore, Baker Hughes data revealed a reduction in U.S. oil rigs, with eight fewer operating last week, bringing the total to 465—the lowest since November 2021. Despite these gains, the oil market remains attentive to potential actions by OPEC+, which could unwind the remainder of its 2.2 million barrels per day production cut by the end of October.
