Iranian film director Jafar Panahi Cannes festival comeback • FRANCE 24 English

uh pane in can there are some red carpet moments that are more symbolic than others. That of Jaffa Panay is one of them. The dissident Iranian filmmaker made his first appearance at the festival since he was banned from making movies or traveling abroad in 2010, having been convicted of propaganda against the system. The truth is I’ve missed watching a film with an audience because I couldn’t put my films in cinemas. I couldn’t sit and watch them or see people’s reactions. The reaction of the baby now. Pay shoots in secret and when he was unable to leave Iran, he once smuggled a documentary to KN on a flash drive stashed in a cake. This time he presented his new feature, It Was just an accident, which tells the story of political prisoners tempted to take revenge on their torturers. The project comes after the director was himself released from jail in 2023. It’s the first movie he’s made where a female character doesn’t wear the hijab, reflecting the change in Iranian society since protests after the death of Masa Amini in 2022. The premiere elicited strong emotion from the cast and crew dedicating it to Iranian filmmakers. Many are banned from working, particularly women who stood with the people during the Masahamini movement. They were banned simply because they supported the people. Payi says he intends to return home after the festival despite the dangers. A second Iranian film is competing in the festival’s top competition, Mother and Child by Say Rusti. AI was sentenced to six months jail following the CAN 2022 screening of his film Leila’s Brothers.

He says he feels alive thanks to filmmaking – and also the danger of continuing to work in the Islamic Republic. This is the dissident Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi who is back at the Cannes Film Festival after an abscence of 15 years. Imprisoned twice and until recently subjected to a travel ban, Panahi saying he is not afraid of the consequences of showing his film “It Was Just an Accident” in Cannes. Carys Garland reports.

  1. They only give awards to Iranian films that are against the Iranian government. The awards are only political. It's ridiculous.
