London congestion charge to rise

  1. Excellent news, let’s hope more people are put off driving in London

  2. People don’t drive into London because they just fancy it. I understand the need for it but making it more expensive is just pushing this price onto poorer people

  3. I can’t wait to hear how this is a WEF-sanctioned war on motorists from people who have a car instead of a personality

  4. Good – and great they’re finally abolishing the 90% discount for residents.

We have people living in zones 2+ who aren’t allowed to get a local permit because their homes are car free due to being built near good public transport. Yet people in zone 1 with amazing public transport can get local parking permits and almost free congestion charge.

Zone 1 should be basically car free. If there’s not enough space for pedestrians (there isn’t, people walk in the road all the time), bicycles (so much of central London still has no safe cycle routes) and buses (buses get caught in traffic in central to the point that they’re slower than walking) then there’s definitely not enough space for cars.

    Make it make sense.

  5. the fee has not gone up since 2020. (unlike public transport fares which have been increased each year)

this is just reversing (-ish) the real-value discount that’s crept in to the congestion charge fare the half decade since.

  6. I never drive in the congestion zone, but I’m still not sure this is a good thing.

Most road use in the zone is business use, and usually only because you can’t get away from it. Work vans are the big ones of course.

I’m not sure it will actually stop people driving into London, people are put off already. It’s just a money grab imo, and the cost will only be passed on to consumers.

Maybe it hits some rich people being chauffered? I’m not against that, but it won’t have any effect on road use, it’s still just tax money
