Help me settle an argument. It was listed as a bank holiday on the Scottish government website but my local pharmacy is saying that it was 'only an English bank holiday and you should have picked up your meds yesterday'

  1. It was a bank holiday yes. However, your pharmacy may or may not be in a bank, so they may or may not be open.

  2. It’s not a bank holiday everywhere. I think glasgow was but it’s one that varies by council district. The banks however were shut yesterday.

  3. No it was an English Bank holiday. GP, pharmacy and Westmarc were all open.

  4. I was working yesterday but my sister who works in Health centre was off for the bank holiday. So seems it does vary. I think I get one in September that she doesn’t get.

  5. It was absolutely a bank holiday in Scotland, however the Edinburgh Council website seems to have them observing Victoria Day on May 19th instead.

  6. What’s it to them when you pick up your meds?

  7. Yes, it was. We’ve had the Spring Bank Holiday fixed to the last Monday in May since 1971, which replaced Whit Monday (seven weeks after Easter Monday).

So the last Monday in May is always a bank holiday in all of the four nations.

  8. Scottish cities traditionally set their own local public holidays with Glasgow closest to the “UK” holidays. This was a way IIRC where holidaying workers could shop in other towns. The Scottish Government’s attempt to centralise holidays has not been a success so the website should be taken with a pinch of salt

  9. Bank holidays in Scotland are set by local authorities not central government so they have a certain latitude in observing them or not.

IIRC correctly one of the Western Isles (South Uist) bundles all the bank holidays together, the logic being is that you can’t nip off for a bank holiday weekend due to travel difficulties – but a week off means you can.

  10. I know it was atleast an English Bank Hokiday as in my work Scotland don’t get Bank Holidays off (bar Xmas and New Years day) and get TOIL days instead, whilst our English colleagues get the Bank Holidays off and they were off yesterday.

  11. My Drs’ surgery was closed for the bank holiday and we’re in Scotland.

  12. Yes it was a bank holiday, however not everyone observes it, or they may get the day off in lieu.

Where I work we get the bank holidays added to our annual allowance to take when we want, lets me take them off as a full week. The exception being Christmas, Boxing Day, and NY day.

  13. My understanding is that the May bank holidays, beginning of and end of, are the same in Scotland and England.

The ones that vary are – Easter Monday, you get in England and not Scotland, Summer bank holiday (August) beginning of Month in Scotland, end of the Month in England.

Jan 2nd Scotland only, November 30th Scotland only.

This can all get a little confused with some companies still following “Fair Days”. I’ve worked places that give you an extra holiday for the Glasgow Fair, for example. Others may give you the “fair day” in exchange for another bank holiday such as the end on May.

  14. Most Pharmacy’s seem to follow “local” holidays which are even harder to remember. Things like first Monday in August instead of last etc

  15. My local pub quiz is held on a Sunday night, couldny find a seat the other night cos the place was stowed, when I walked in the door I immediately thought “Ah fuck, is it a bank holiday the morra?”, that was the only way I knew lol

  16. People get confused between bank holidays and public/local holidays in Scotland. Bank holidays are followed by banks, post offices and many UK wide companies, they are listed on the Scottish government’s website. Public holidays are followed locally by schools & some local companies, these vary from council to council. The best place to get a list of your public holidays is the local council website.
Some bank holidays will also be a public holiday where you are, some will not.
So it was a bank holiday, the question is if it was a public holiday where you live.
