A neighbour in our street parks his motorbike like this and yesterday the 2 fietskluisen were unable to be opened. Numerous people including myself were unable to use our bicycles.
One of the neighbours has spoken to the owner of the motorcycle but he obviously doesn't care. Is this even legal to park on the pavement and if not am I being petty phoning the police? My wife thinks I shouldn't, but I think I should. Not only is he being inconsiderate to the owners of the bicycles parked in the fietskluisen but he is also blocking the pavement.

  1. That bike looks like it tips right over. How about people grow a pair.

  2. don’t ask him to move the bike, *tell* him to stop parking there.
if he still refuses afterwards, call the police

  3. “He obviously doesn’t care”. What kind of a shitbag is this? If someone came asking me, I’d probably apologize, saying, “Oh sure, I didn’t know it was in the way. I’ll park it a few meters further next time. No worries”. This person deserves every bit of karma coming to him. But if you tried talking, then police is the next step. Or insulation foam in the exhaust. Or accidentally bumping my old rusty bike against his. I’ll let you be the judge of that.

  4. It’s allowed to park on the pavement if not blocking pedestrian flow. In this case it clearly does, so I think police would fine him (or at least warn him).

  5. Unfortunately, motorbikes are authorised to be parked on the sidewalk by law and the guy is being a dikkenek.

    Also, just move it.

  6. One may park 2-wheeled vehicles on the sidewalk, under certain conditions:

    – Same restrictions as cars: not too close to pedestrian crossings and intersections, not hiding signs, and not in front of garages (*Do these bike storages count as garages? I’d argue so, but probably not strictly so*) ; “no parking” signs however do not apply. Additionally, not alongside ‘loading/unloading zones’.

    – Must leave enough room for unobstructed traffic. By default, this means leave at least 1.50m of width on the sidewalk ; the code doesn’t specifically say that number, but it’s the convention to allow the passage of strollers and wheelchairs.

I’d call the police, and if the police tells me to move it myself, well… good odds I’ll cause it to fall over, these things are heavy, and I only got one hand.

  7. Open the bicycles thing and if it makes the bike fall, too bad 😇

  8. Talk to the guy yourself first before taking drastic measures. Who knows how the conversation between him and your neighbour went down.

  9. Biker here!

As another commenter has said, talk to the guy yourself first. Bikers are usually chill. He rides a Honda, not a Harley.

Judging by the picture he could park a little more to the right, would that leave enough space for you? Or is there another spot on the pavement where he could park?

Do not move the motorcycle yourself. Do not touch it, do not fuck with it.

The law says we can park our bike on the sidewalk if we are not obstructing pedestrians (1.5m of free space).

  10. I’d go talk to him myself, as if you didn’t know someone else already did it before you. Be friendly. If there’s multiple people reaching out in a respectful manner, he might change his ways.

He is absolutely a douchebag, no doubt about that, but if you go in angry and shouty there’s even less chance of “making him considerate”.

Only if you’ve asked nicely, you can start throwing piss discs.

  11. > Is this even legal to park on the pavement

Yes it is. HOWEVER, you can not hinder anyone or anything when doing so. So he’s obviously in the wrong here. Call the wijkagent.

  12. Id just call the police, they contact the owner and ask to move, also give some advice to not park like that.

  13. I’m sure there’s a lock with his name on it out there, the kind where the key can get easily lost…

  14. I see a big scratch on the sidewalk from the dragging kickstand. Looks like somedy moved it already.

  15. Is dat in Brugge (buiten de ring)? In Brugge hebben ze (ook) die fietskluizen.

  16. Beste aan deze post is dat de post eronder in mijn feed zegt “can we not introduce a tipping culture?” 😂
