Alabama Public Library Service chairman John Wahl said he was pleased to read a recent United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit decision allowing librarians to remove books from shelves.
The appeal came after a Texas court ruled in favor of parents who wanted sexually explicit and racist literature returned to shelves after it was removed by the library.
Wahl said on FM Talk 106.5’s “The Jeff Poor Show” that after fighting to protect children from similar materials in libraries, he was pleased to read the ruling. He said those on his side of the argument has been called “extremists” and “Nazis.”
“I think we can all agree, whether whatever your background is, whether you’re Republican, Democrat, or independent, or your racial makeup, this is not about politics,” said Wahl. “This is about what is best for our children.”
Wahl said the decision was a win for common sense. He said he hopes that common sense spreads nationwide.
Wahl said the ruling extends beyond local control and protects librarians from being compelled to use taxpayer dollars to place certain materials on shelves.
