Properties linked to Fair Deal scheme could be used to accommodate Ukrainian refugees

  1. Most families don’t rent them because it’s difficult to get a tenant out to sell, so unless they’re exempt from usual landlord rules this is just pagentry.

  2. I was under the impression that the number of refugees was linked to population.

I read yesterday that The Netherlands with a population 3.5x ours is only taking 50k.

Why are we on the hook for 200k that we obviously cannot provide for?

Of course we need to help, but it needs to be realistic.

  3. I hear some of the labor shortages are being ended by said Ukrainian people, wonder if that was the real reason Ireland jumped on so many without thinking about the housing situation that doesn’t effect many of the people in power, much like the cost of living and so much more.

  4. I’m 100% behind helping Ukrainian refugees. They have no part in the issues the country has.

However, I find it unbelievable that the government can take in 30,000 refugees over the course of a few weeks, but have been unable to house the thousands of homeless and thousands of families waiting on help for the last decade.

Maybe I’m missing something, but this feels like a spit in the face of what the whole country has been begging for; more homes to buy and more social (council) accommodation.

  5. Honestly, what are they doing? There are so many people willing to pledge accommodation who just need a bit of help with paying their bills. Instead of creating even the smallest incentive, the government is now going to take properties that have been promised for decades from people who are really fed up with being stuck in rentals for 20+ years. This is insane, it will lead to worsening the situation for so little payoff and creating hostility where there was none. Why? Why is there not a single person in government making smart decisions?

  6. This is just like work – I have to work my ass off and make sacrifices just so my boss can look good sitting on his ass, making even more commitments for double the pay.

  7. If the 200k figure comes to pass our country will crumble. It’s better to properly look after 20k than have an entire population live in poverty. We are doomed.

  8. Utter disgrace and spit in the face to the Irish struggling with rents, unable to buy a home , homelessness, people waiting on housing lists 15+ years , people stuck in family hubs and emergency accommodation years. Complete virtue signalling. Government should be ashamed of themselves.

  9. I’m afraid that this will radicalise those towards anti-immigration and refugee sentiments. Let’s not blame the victims of war over Government negligence in the past decades
