Cannes 2025: Cara Delevingne on the power of women • FRANCE 24 English
[Music] Double prizewinning brothers Luke and Jean-Pierre Dardan won their first palm door back in 1999 with Rosetta and their second in 2005 for the child. Well, they are now back in the can competition for the 10th time. So, we’re going to cross to the French Riviera and join our culture editor, Eve Jackson. Uh, so Eve, what is Young Mothers all about then? Well, Young Mothers follows five young women who are living together in a home for young moms. It’s a powerful, intimate portrait of early motherhood, support, and survival. As always with the Dardarden brothers, it’s raw, real, and deeply human. And it really shines a light on the challenges and resilience of women on the margins of society. Jeepierre Darden told us more about the essence of the film. The film follows each of these young girls and shows how they free themselves from a burden and destiny that has been imposed on them since childhood. It shows how they cope and which path they have to go through to free themselves. [Music] [Music] [Music] Seems [Music] Well, as the Dardan brothers explore community and solidarity among uh women and young mothers, Iranian director Sed Rous offers a much darker portrait than of motherhood in his latest can entry, Eve. Well, the film follows a widowed nurse, a mother of two. She attempts to start a new life with a charming but self-s serving fiance, but it spirals into a catastrophe where the dardens show mothers supporting each other through systemic hardship. This film lays bare the emotional isolation and societal judgment that can come with single motherhood in Iran. And with a powerful performance from Parinaz Ayad, the film is a somber, slow burning tragedy. um mother and child or woman and child rather shows just how precarious a woman’s plays can be, especially when the patriarchy is so deeply entrenched. It’s a harrowing, emotionally raw companion to the festival’s broader exploration of women’s lives. Take a look. Well, Eve, the festival is coming to an end then. So, how has it been this year? This has been a cracking year, Erin. We’ve had politics, stars, and great films. a social media journalist from Stella Elgazmar has been making fabulous videos for us focusing on what goes on behind the scenes and I wanted to bring her in because it’s your first time at the Can Film Festival. How has it been Stella? Indeed, Eve. It’s my very first time covering the festival and it was an incredible experience for me not only because I met a lot of festival goers but also I saw actors, directors, celebrities all around and to work with an incredible front 24 team. So yeah, it was wonderful. A and tell us about some of your highlights. So, as you know, if I have lots of best moments, but if I had to pick my top three highlights, I would say definitely the day when I met Leon to Zisco, which we can translate in English as the steplot gang. Those people just in front of the palestas, the red carpet who queue for hours under the sun just to stop the celebrities uh during the evening actually for the red carpet. And it was so funny to meet there to have a lot of chat with there because they showed me their pictures with Robert Dairo, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence. The autographs was so funny. They are so dedicated and so patient. And even you got to go on the red carpet, didn’t you? Yes, I did. I got actually an accreditation to work on the red carpet as a video journalist with all the other thousand of photographers coming from all around the world. And it was an incredible moment for me also because uh there was the premiere of the film Edington with incredible stars and I took the very moment when Emma Stone was attacked by a bee just next to Pedro Pascal and Austin Butler. It was a moment that I would never forget for my life. Yeah, it’s a clip that went viral, wasn’t it? And um you actually got to meet a great star as well, didn’t you? I did actually. Yesterday I had the pleasure to interview an incredible star. let you discover in a minute who she is. And let me tell you that she’s one of my childhood idols. She’s incredible for her personality, her character. She was stunning yesterday, beautiful and also on the red carpet. And yeah, let I’ll let you discover who she is. Hi Cara, how are you? I’m good. How are you? I’m fine, thank you. You look stunning, beautiful. Can you tell us about your makeup look today? Very simple. Just, you know, less was more today just for, you know, talking to people, not like last night. I think, you know, I always want to do something a bit different. What gives you like confidence when you are on the red carpet? I don’t know. I always get nervous. You know, whatever happens is meant to happen. So, I just kind of go, listen, if I fall over, if I fall up the stairs, whatever happens, it will be okay. You know, life will move on. But, you know, I just try and have fun with it as much as possible because it’s an honor to be on that carpet. This is your first time as a L’Oreal Perry ambassador at Khan. Who is Ka Delvin here at Khan? And what’s your mission here? To eat food. Is that a mission? But also, you know, to support and to first, you know, this is my first time being here with L’Oreal. So to, you know, to continue getting to meet some of my idols, especially the other ambassadors of L’Oreal. How has being a L’Oreal Paris ambassador helped shine light on your activism? they have especially here you know with light on women of worth um highlighting women filmmakers it’s a really special thing because especially what they’re trying to do with sustainability or I think they’re constantly trying to push the narrative on women supporting each other and lifting women up and they really follow through with that. So to me that’s always something I believed in um women empowerment, women education, uh women working together. So for me it was a perfect fit. And there are other women that inspire you in life. Uh, you know, I’m a big believer in women who do things for the first time. I think women like Gloria Steinum or Jane Goodall, women who stand for something, women who don’t give up, women who do not shy away from adversity, women who are resilient. Yeah. Thank you so much. Thank you, Eve and Stella in Ken. Thank you so very much for that roundup.
Arts Editor Eve Jackson reports from the Cannes Film Festival, highlighting the return of Belgian filmmakers Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne with their new film “Young Mothers”. The film offers a raw, intimate look at five young women navigating early motherhood in a communal home. Through their struggles, the Dardennes explore themes of resilience, solidarity, and liberation from generational hardship. Eve also contrasts this with Iranian director Saeed Roustaee’s harrowing portrait of isolated single motherhood. She’s joined by social media journalist Stella Elgersma to share some festival highlights and behind-the-scenes moments.
