Virginia Natural Gas is building a new $50 million operations headquarters in Chesapeake.

The project features 39,000 square feet of office space and a 30,000-square-foot warehouse.

Roughly 150 employees — from the company’s Virginia Beach and Chesapeake locations — will work at the new facility situated on almost 30 acres on Clearfield Avenue.

The company held a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday at the southern Greenbrier site just north of Great Bridge. Construction is anticipated for completion between October and December 2026.

One of four natural gas distribution companies operating under Southern Company Gas, Virginia Natural Gas maintains its corporate headquarters on South Independence Boulevard in Virginia Beach.

Virginia Natural Gas President and CEO Shannon O. Pierce said in a news release that the investment underscores the company’s dedication to the community and its role in supporting the region’s economic growth and sustainability.

“As VNG celebrates our 175th anniversary this year, we look forward to continuing to serve the families, schools, hospitals, small businesses, large employers and military installations in Chesapeake and in the region,” she said.

Virginia Natural Gas was founded in 1850 and serves more than 310,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in southeastern Virginia, according to the company’s website.
