This is exactly what I have experienced living in Ireland. Pay huge rent for houses that are not insulated or maintained properly and put back together cheaply that in a month or so it fails again. Report it and get accused not looking after it properly and being threatened to be evicted. So now keep quiet and suffer through it.
As stupid as it sounds, i think both have a point. Relatively speaking, Ireland is a great country to live in, but there are systemic issues here which do get quite frustrating. I think the issue is the extremes. You see people say shit like “Ireland is a third-world country” or that everything’s shit, so I nearly feel the need to say “it’s actually decent”, but at the same time, there’s a lot I wish we could change/
All about your place in it. Isn’t it?
Ireland is a great place to live if you own a home, have a car and have a good job where you can work remotely.
Dublin is a shit place to live relative to many wealthy European capitals in terms of infrastructure and rental property standards if you don’t own a home or a car, and aren’t making a tonne of cash.
Dublin is a great place to live relative to a war torn country, somewhere with massive corruption or gangs, food scarcity etc.
It’s all relative.
well local politics isn’t so bad, no real far right unlike in the rest of europe. the actual locals are regarded as one of the better things about ireland by people who have moved here
As a few others have said, both points are perfectly valid.
Compared to much of the world it is a great place to live but compared to a lot of the developed world we’re majorly lacking in things like infrastructure, nature, nice urban areas, healthcare, depth of culture etc as well as having a pretty miserable climate
It just depends how rich you are, there’s your duality.
To me, it’s the people who make the place great. Financially and when it comes to healthcare and public services, Austria is the fucking promised land. However, you’ll not get the random sesh in the country pub where the auld lad starts in on a song and you could hear a pin drop. You don’t get the little bit of friendly banter in a shop or out on a walk. You don’t get the neighbour who decides to help you put up your fence just because he happened to walk by. I don’t think if you’ve grown up with that you necessarily notice it and it might even get on your tits but that’s what I first fell in love with about the place and it’s kept pulling me back against all better judgement.
As a Dutchman, I can safely say anyone complaining about the people probably has a stick up their arse.
Ireland also ain’t that bad in most regards, however the infrastructure is pretty shite. Public transport ain’t great, water is a disgrace, the medical system is a fucking disaster and let’s not even talk about the housing. These are all issues in other countries at the moment as well might I add (OK except sewage, wtf Ireland).
I’d argue the education system is far better than people believe (at a secondary and tertiary level), pedestrian areas in cities are about average and amenities are plentiful considering population (density).
Oh, I’m so famous right now
I’ve lived in loads of countries. Some rich, some very poor. My impression is that among rich countries, each have their own set of problems that are very different, so it’s hard to say which is better or worse. It really depends on your circumstances.
For example, I lived in France which is far better in terms of services. But people are just as miserable there due to their own issues. For example, unemployment is stubbornly high and the bureaucracy is a nightmare that you can’t even begin to imagine if you’ve never experienced it. There’s also no shortage of anti-social behaviour there either. The only time I was afraid of anti-social people was when I lived in France. Politically it’s toxic too and both sides. In fact, Ireland is a bastion of enlightened centrism compared to most of the world.
Japan was even better on the infrastructure front. Probably the best country in the world. Anti-social behaviour is very uncommon (although more common if you’re a foreigner). Housing is affordable because it’s not really considered a good investment. This is because houses are built to last a generation. So the value of the house itself depreciates over time and to flip the property, you have to knock the existing house and replace it with a new one. Almost all house purchases are for new-builds. But their politics are also fucked and they have a demographic time bomb on their hands. Not to mention, work life balance is shite and far worse if you’re a woman.
So what makes a country better to live in depends entirely on the person. For example, you’re well off enough to afford housing and don’t need to rely on public transport, Ireland is arguably better than France and Japan. If you’re not doing well, then Ireland is far worse.
A lot happened to that lad in 12 minutes.
Let me break this down to it’s basest level. €4.50 for a chicken roll with just butter… the fucking state…
Let me break this down to it’s basest level. €4.50 for a chicken roll with just butter… the state of that…
As a young person in college as much as I love the country I hate that i don’t really have a future here due to issues your man/woman described in the post.
The duality of your auld lady.
The Irish, a great bunch of bastards.
Ireland is a pyramid scheme with nice elements of nature sprinkled around.
Having lived in New York, Dubai and London, Ireland is actually a great country to live in.
doing an exchange here from Vienna rn and must say while Ireland is beautiful the infrastructure is abysmal and housing prices are a joke. Problem is Vienna is regarded as one of the the best cities in the world to live because transit and housing is more or less excellent so idk if thats a good standard. Also Alcohol is too expensive wtf
I think Ireland tends to compare itself to other English speaking countries. In that regard we are probably bottom in terms of standard of living or maybe America possibly if we are talking about the average citizen. On a global scale tho we have a lot going for us.
Ireland has plenty of issues but the pros outweigh the cons imo.
I wanted to move there really bad but I hear so many terrible things 🙁 i live in berlin right now and life isn’t fantastic either
It’s as if Ireland is a flawed country with many good and bad things.
Sorry but antisocial behaviour in Ireland is only bad if you haven’t lived in other places… like its more or less one of the safest places to be born in terms of violence and murder… you’ll have scrotes and all that but you’ll find there are *les scrôtes* in France and *das schrötens* in Germany too
I think we probably have to accept that Ireland peaked for a brief period in the mid-2000s. All Western countries have been going through this malaise in the last 30 years; even America.
My conclusion of ireland is very simple.
The country is beautiful and the nicest looking places in the world.
The cities are pretty drab nothing to see.
Simultaneously aware that I’m not living in hell but also can’t really afford to rent and may need to move elsewhere to build a future. Don’t know why we need to keep getting talked down to over it.
Ireland is a great country to live in.
It’s far better than many in the world, it does however have /all/ the issues listed by the other person.
Both statements are true so…. yeah.
Best country in the world. Thank you Ireland for everything. ❤️
Don’t forget the healthcare system!
Irish people are the friendlies from what I have seen. All other points are valid though
You’ve got to compare like with like.
Yalls comparing Ireland to France and the USA and the UK and Japan. Crazy. Ireland can’t be in that league, Ireland is a former colony.
Should be comparing Ireland to countries like Estonia, Iceland, Greece.
BREAKING NEWS: People have different opinions. People have different life experiences. People have different needs.
Got it.
I lived in Australia for 14 years. Objectively, it’s a better country to live in – salaries, weather, lifestyle, health system etc. But I moved back to Ireland and am so much happier here. Most people who say Ireland is completely shit have never lived anywhere else. Australia is fabulous for a few years, but after a while, you start to notice what is really missing in society there
There’s a generational wealth gap in Ireland that will rapidly increase tensions, anti-social behaviour, and far right/anti-immigration sentiment unless it is addressed. I see it happening already. The young of Ireland feel very hopeless in this country. They do not see a viable future… Priced out of the housing market they are expected to work and pay into a country without every feeling secure in the country they were born into. I believe it is worse now than in the 80s because while Ireland was poorer in the 80s, everybody was poor. It isn’t the same now. Some do very very well in Ireland. Others will never do well. I never saw such disaffection and disenfranchisement in the young as I see now.
I lived in various countries all around Europe. So far I love Ireland the most. I do not understand why the Irish seem to down-play the quality of their communities and life in general. I am assuming it’s a cultural thing of not being “too proud”, or maybe most Irish people are less aware of what “normal life” looks like outside of Ireland.
Ireland is a great place to live…
If you own a house with a low mortgage and you have a low insurance cost car.
My QOL defo went up when i traded in my 1800 euro a month shitbox apt in dublin to a 4 bed house 50 mins away from dublin with a 800 euro mortgage
