Seven months after it happened, some victims of the encryption event that held City of Sheboygan data hostage are just now being discovered.

City Administrator Casey Bradley announced on Wednesday that “Following a comprehensive and thorough review of the data involved, the City learned on May 14th that certain individuals’ personal information was affected by (the) incident.”  Those persons affected were notified of the fact by postal mail last week Friday, May 23rd.

Immediately after the City discovered the October 31st security event, steps were taken to secure its digital environment and investigations began to determine the extent of the data breach.  Weeks later, social media posts claimed that hundreds of gigabytes of data from the City of Sheboygan were being held for ransom by the hacker group called “Chort”.

The City has long since secured its system, but the investigation is ongoing and still revealing the extent of the ransomware event.
