I can see some protests over energy costs in the near future.
This is probably a good thing for the medium term.
At least were coming into summer. If this continues into winter I’m sure relief will be rolled out, for FF/FG re-election hopes if nothing else.
We have low VAT on certain things in Ireland. Labor charges, energy charges, etc.. The EU is already a bit twitchy about Ireland and our self imposed low tax rates.
If we start messing with the VAT levels as a response to international market pricing? That’s a big no no. They can’t stop us initially lowering it, but they can make us harmonise everything to the higher percent after that.
So it would screw up a lot of sectors where we are benefiting from low vat rates.
VAT is only one constituent of the taxes our government applied to fuel if we’re being pedantic
What’s the reasoning behind the EU being the deciding factor in if we can reduce VAT on anything?
