Canadian province of Manitoba declares a state of emergency over wildfires as thousands flee

  4. i hope California sends a battalion up there to help out. Least we can do for how they helped us out lat year.

  6. perhaps Canada – you could take more steps to become, I don’t know, carbon neutral?

    EDIT: I’m Canadian. I would like to think I understand the politics of my country better than not. And of course this doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t support these people – but honestly the wildfires for the past few years have been getting out of hand.

  8. People have to stop starting these fires. Only 1 current out of control fire is natural. It’s getting pathetic.

  9. Remeber when Canada sent water bombers over to California … even after Trump was an asshat to us. Guess who won’t be returning the favour ….

  12. Yikes so scary 😓 unfortunately it will get worse . Especially with the summer being predicted to be hot and dry in alot of US states as well

  14. Manitoban here. I’m thankful to not be anywhere near these fires, but we can see the smoke in the air and breath it in daily. It’s not fun at all, and all we can do is hope and pray for some rain in the coming days to help out as other fires have unfortunately taken some lives in Lac Du Bonnet a few weeks ago. It’s heartbreaking and we need a lot of help

  16. I have family on the western border of the province and a cabin on the eastern border. Family had to evacuate and my cabin is probably on fire as we speak. Just devastating and so widespread, feels like there’s nowhere to hide. We were on evacuation watch ourselves a couple weeks ago. No rain in the forecast for 2 weeks. Fucking scary.

  18. As callous as as this might sound, it’s not the end of the world. Change is inevitable. Always has been and the world will go on. It will just be inconvenient for an average modern day person. And people hate being uncomfortable and inconvenienced.

  19. Many Canadians are being hit with 30%+ home insurance premiums this year as they renew. I imagine next year will be another expensive year for home owners. 

  21. If that is a picture of the fire I will say that it is truly apocalyptic. From past news I do recall some forest fires in Canada are gigantic: tens and hundreds of thousands of acres in size but given the size of the country and low population density many never get much notice.

    I still remember the Fort McMurray fire videos including the many of people driving along highways that were a wall of flame.
