7. A large number of suburban and rural homes in the US are not connected to centralized sewage systems. There’s a fairly upscale township near me with over 20,000 people, and no sewer. Septic systems work just fine for many, many people. 

   The phrase “without access to indoor plumbing” should have been the headline.

9. I think outhouses are common far from the big cities. No septic tanks.

   That can be an issue if they’re drawing water from a well.

16. I live in a small hamlet in Ohio. Most houses still have a cesspool with a straight tile line to the creek. Not having central sewers in rural areas is why more common than you think.

22. To all saying stuff about septic tanks. Trust me they never heard of this term. We are talking about a hole in the ground. That’s it. Usually with a little wooden hut over it. It’s fucking horrible.

23. Septic tanks are used is large parts of the US as well, while still supporting high end homes. Not sure this is a good meassure in itself.
