  1. Good to see that there is some smoke free progress happening in the world! Here in New Zealand we have been scrapping our smoke free policies and giving tobacco companies tax breaks.

  5. The air is public domain. Can’t really be having second hand smoke up in other peoples faces. The titles is misleading. The ban is not as comprehensive as this post title suggests though.

  8. I’m currently in Europe and I can’t believe how common smoking in public areas is here. Spain and Italy, everywhere you go smells like an ashtray.

    Coming from the US where I guess we got smoking more under control a while back, it was quite a shock. Walking the streets of Rome and Barcelona was quite nasty.

  11. Smoking is obnoxious and disgusting frankly. Smoke at home if you want to, but I certainly would not want to breathe in carcinogenic fumes from other people’s addictions just because we are both in a public space.

    I am in Australia and we have been banning smoking from lots of areas resulting in congregations of smokers on the footpath resulting in more complaints about smokers.

    I stopped smoking and then went to Japan. I was worried about thr high rate of smoking in Jaoan but…
    They manage it!
    Nice clean air-conditioned smoking booths at train stations.
    Smoking areas in other places.
    Wind curtains to prevent smoke from disturbing other people.

    But we like to ban and fine.
    Looks like the French do as well.

    I also find it weird how addiction is seen as a medical problem until it comes to smoking.
    Meth? Oh your an addiction and need help.
    Smokers? You disgusting smelling inconsiderate monster.

    Second, that use of full caps is standard for the Daily Mail, a shit “newspaper”.

    And last, so fucking what? The three places (parks, beaches and schools) were clearly chosen because they are places where kids are often present, and it’s not a bad thing for them not to see their parents and other adults smoking and then want to emulate them.

  17. In Italy is also illegal to smoke outside many public areas, like stations, hospitals etc… no one follows those rules as they are not enforced at all 🙁 hope France does a better job.

  30. I still remember once going to a restaurant in France years ago and we asked to be seated at a no-smoking table. Only problem was it was surrounded by smoking tables.

    Glad to see they are finally doing what other countries have already done.

  31. The french do love a smoke. So many younger people too in their 20s. Aussie have pretty much gave up or go to vapes now. Seeing all the french back packers smoking. This gonna him them hard back home

  32. I have a hard time seeing people not smoking at beaches. They love to tan and smoke and dehydrate.

  33. Headline is exaggerated of course. But I’d say this change is good. Second hand smoking is a big problem in a country with so many smokers (close to 25% of it’s entire population), so banning it in certain open areas like beaches, parks and schools can help curb it at least a little.

    I mean. Bus shelters in the UK all have no smoking signs. I mean, people ignore them and there’s no one to enforce it.

    But it’s still banned.

  36. No smoking here, that’s a good thing. We will be able to enjoy the beach without the smell of cigarettes
