Iranian filmmaker Jafar Pahani was given a hero’s welcome on his return to Tehran on May 26 by supporters after winning the top prize at the Cannes film festival, footage posted on social media showed.

Let's analyze what this report says: 1- he made the movie in Iran, 2- he got private funding like every movies in Hollywood, 3- his movie was widely shown, 4- he picked up an award in France, 5- Returned home to a welcoming crowd. It's definitely political but the west loves to make things more directly political than they actually are. Prison abuse can happen anywhere. Is there systemic problems in Iran? Yes. Is there systemic problems in the US for example as well ? Also yes.
You'll say they can't be compared. As a person having experienced both I say they are a smitten image of one another.
