How Common is Drug and Alcohol Abuse Among Music Stars? A Statistical Analysis

  1. Data is totally flawed to the point of being useless. Taylor swift could have a pill problem, we’d never hear about it in a million years. Gucci mane sippin on that syzurp? That’ll shamelessly be in his songs.

  2. This is pretty terrible tbh. The author doesn’t distinguish between drug use and drug addiction, and often interchanges the two. Someone can drink alcohol without being an addict. Same with doing drugs. Also, some of the numbers are ludicrous. You’re telling me >90% of musicians are never doing drugs — including alcohol? That’s significantly lower than the general population and it’s never really addressed.

  3. How do you even begin to define these categories?

    What is a star?

What is a musician? Musicians tend to work in different sectors at the same time.

And most of all: how do you even know how much drugs they take?

” I analyzed over 10,000 Wikipedia biographies (for the most trafficked musician pages), identifying mentions of drug and alcohol abuse”

I know musicians who died young and they lived chaotic lives. Didn’t eat properly, drank a lot, worked weird hours, earnt little money. Perhaps that’s the problem.

  4. Because their Wikipedia page doesn’t mention drugs or alcohol, the musician has never used either. Genius method.
