Just moved to Germany and saw this today in Berlin.
Still figuring out the “bike etiquette” rules — is this normal? Or will I get passive-aggressively scolded by someone in a reflective vest? 😅

  1. Although this is Germany, nobody cares about the rules when it comes to bike parking. I don’t even know what the rules are. There is no parking spots for bikes, so everybody just does what is necessary.

  2. Yea, of course. As long as the bike doesn’t block the sidewalk no one will care.

  3. Honestly, I have no idea. But I would park it like that and I wouldn’t get upset if someone else did.

For me personally: Absolut fine. How the lawmakers see it: I have no idea.:)

  4. When everyone does it, why should you be singled out? Anyways, it should be common courtesy, not to block sidewalks, parking spaces or roads. Leave some space for people with wheelchairs and strollers and mind places where bikes are not welcome to park. Otherwise, knock yourself out.

  5. Rule of thumb: as long as you aren’t blocking any entrances to buildings, electrical boxes or similar; and a stroller/wheelchair can still easily pass your bike, it’s fine.
