Can anyone please tell me if this is only valid for Berlin or all Germany?

  1. It’s wrong. You have 3 days after getting the keys on the first day of your contract to pay the whole thing or you pay 1/3 on the first day after getting the keys and 1/3 with the next rent and the last 1/3 with the rent for the month after that.

And it’s like that everywhere in Germany

  2. It’s a federal law. §551 (2) BGB:

    > Ist als Sicherheit eine Geldsumme bereitzustellen, so ist der Mieter zu drei gleichen monatlichen Teilzahlungen berechtigt. Die erste Teilzahlung ist zu Beginn des Mietverhältnisses fällig. Die weiteren Teilzahlungen werden zusammen mit den unmittelbar folgenden Mietzahlungen fällig.

  3. I think the more relevant point is, that while you have the right so split the safety deposit, you will most likely not *get* the apartment if you insist on splitting it😅

  4. This method exists, but if 10 people want the apartment and nine offered to pay the Kaution upfront and you are the only one wanting to pay instalments, what do you think how high your chances are?

  5. More importantly
Don’t pay it in cash banks offer special accounts that run in your name but the landlord can access only if I remember correctly

  6. Hi there! Just moved to Germany and yes my landlord told me that I can pay my kaution in three installments (split into first 3 months). It is also stated in my contract. He was the one who told me that I can pay in 3 installments and that it is according to law so he said he gives that option to his tenants. 😊
