The day commemorates the first modern multi-party Croatian Parliament that was convened on May 30th, 1990.
A range of events took place in cities and towns around the country in celebration of the important date in Croatian history.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković laid wreaths and lit candles at the Monument to the Homeland in the nation’s capital.
Congratulating citizens on Statehood Day, both emphasized the historical importance of constituting the first democratically elected, multi-party Parliament 35 years ago. They also gave thanks to the country’s first President Franjo Tuđman and the Croatian defenders for helping to secure the country’s freedom and independence.
Jandroković emphasized that May 30th, 1990, officially marked the transition from a one-party, totalitarian system to democracy.
“We had a difficult path; one that was much more challenging than other European countries. But that is why we are so proud of what we achieved. By remembering those historic times, we want to continue building Croatia as a free, independent, successful and safe country,” said Jandroković.
Prime Minister Plenković said that Statehood Day marked the centuries-old aspiration for an independent Croatian state.
“The challenges we face today are of a different nature; they are economic and social. The focus now is on ensuring the average Croatian citizen lives better. In that regard, the direction of the country over the past ten years – during which we’ve had the honour of leading the country – is to achieve this fundamental goal and to strengthen Croatia in every way possible,” said Plenković.
Meanwhile, Zagreb Archbishop Dražen Kutleša led a special mass for the homeland in which he called on believers to think positively.
“We must face the painful truth that we are regressing in our numbers, as well as spiritually and morally. Various scandals are shaking our society. Swearing and hate speech have become commonplace. Young people are losing their ideals, and many are choosing the path of least resistance. A spirit of hopelessness and discouragement is spreading. Therefore, let us resist the mentality of hopelessness and fear, and spread the mentality of generosity that gives birth to hope,” said the Archbishop.
