People want change quickly, politicians promise change quickly.
Outcome
1. They don’t change things quickly and get voted out.
2. They change things quickly without thinking and things go wrong. (And maybe get voted out)
The move to decriminalize which de facto allowed for recreational use was unpopular with basically all its neighbors in ASEAN due to how interconnected Southeast Asia is in the drug trade.
It was obvious they moved too fast with the legislation.
They’ll set up a “medical permit” system so you have to pay for a permit and the government will make more money. Here in Arizona it seems like that’s the big play, they were even advertising for people to go get checked out for a permit on the radio. Recreational is still a thing but I’d say it’s a little limited, It’s a cash grab in my eyes.
Except that they keep trying to do that, then the populace gives them the side eye and they back down. There’s literally tens of millions of people who are in one way or another invested in cannabis sales because Thailand hasn’t transitioned to a White collar service economy yet. A lot of locations are roughly 1:1 on dispensaries to restaurants.
People aren’t gonna tolerate this revenue stream being taken away.
