Hi! I got a notification from apple’s weather app that there is a really severe weather warning for area near Frankfurt tomorrow. I had plans in Frankfurt-Heidelberg for that time, I am wondering how severe it is actually? Never heard of a severe thunderstorm in Frankfurt but the description sounds too extreme. Should i cancel and stay at home?
Red | Extreme The weather is very dangerous. Exceptionally intense meteorological phenomena have been forecast. Major damage and accidents are likely, in many cases with a threat to life and limb, over a wide area. Keep frequently informed about detailed expected meteorological conditions and risks. Follow orders and any advice given by your authorities under all circumstances. Be prepared for extraordinary measures.

I use wetter.com and I see a possible thunderstorm around 17:00. Unless it changes, not worth changing plans. Just have shelter when it gets bad.
Unfortunately, these days anything more than a stiff breeze is a “severe weather event”, so it makes it very hard to judge whether we’re truly talking about run-for-your-life tornados or don’t-stand-under-a-tree thunderstorms.
As far as I can tell, looking at various other sites, you can expect, basically, thunderstorms. There will likely be gusts of winds and some hail, and this can be life-threatening if you decide to go windsurfing. Thunderstorms can be powerful, but are small and fast-moving (which is why they’re hard to predict accurately): essentially, you might have to run for cover at some point during the day, mostly likely in the afternoon or evening. Just be sensible and seek shelter in a building, and not (as I say) under a tree.
From what I’ve read they predict severe thunderstorm and hail. How severe it will be locally can differ, I think if you stay in an area where you can find shelter you’ll be fine.
I read that Apple uses the US weather model for forecasting which is not very accurate for continental Europe. But, as I do prefer Android, I cannot provide any information on this based on personal user experience.
“in Frankfurt area” *shows 1/4 of Germany* lmao
All weather models agree on severe thunderstorm activity tomorrow afternoon. The thunderstorms are moving from west to east with first occurrence in Germany over the Eiffel.
How bad it really will be, no one can say with certainty. However, for some regions, and especially Pfalz and greater Frankfurt area, severe winds are forecasted with gusting speeds above 100km/h.
Definitely avoid forests. Prepare for road closures, traffic jams and mass train cancellations.
You can check different weather models here: https://kachelmannwetter.com/de/modellkarten/rapid-id2/deutschland/windboeen/20250531-1600z.html
There is no need to cancel your plans if you prepare for said possibilities and take caution.
Cologne as a part of the Frankfurt area? Bold move. We all know it’s a Suburb of Düsseldorf.
I’m in Frankfurt am Main. I also got this alert but literally nothing happened.
