The city of Mebane experiences economic growth from its social district initiative nearly one year later.

MEBANE, N.C. — The city of Mebane is seeing an economic boost after implementing a social district about one year ago.

The district launched in June of last year.

Social districts allow people to purchase drinks from permitted businesses. They then can walk around with the drink within a designated area.

A spokesperson with the city said over 10,000 social district drinks have been sold and more than half of businesses in the city say it has positively impacted their business or property.

Additionally, 45% have reported an increase in foot traffic as a direct result of the social district.

“We’re excited to see how this initiative continues to support and energize our downtown,” Public Information  Officer Kelly Hunter said.

Mebane is among a growing list of cities in the Triad with a social district including Greensboro, High Point and Lexington.

Just recently city leaders in Reidsville announced they are considering establishing a social district. If approved, businesses can choose whether or not they wish to participate.
