  1. According to the Metropolitan Streets Act of 1867, which arises from the Metropolitan Police District, it is illegal to drive any cattle through the streets during the specific hours of 10 am until 7 pm, unless somebody had specific permission from the Police Commissioner.

This law prohibits “any person driving or conducting cattle in contravention of this section shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding ten shillings for each head of cattle so driven or conducted”.

  2. When the cows come home, make sure it’s not daytime in the UK. 🐄😂

  3. What have cows ever done to England to deserve this?

    ;(

  4. Countries where it’s illegal to maybe or maybe not be praying silently inside your own mind, in some areas, but not all, but some, even in your own house.

  5. And English is the most widely spoken second language globally. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

  6. It’s likely illegal in Sweden as well, just not spelled out explicitly in its own law. Probably falls under animal welfare and traffic laws.

  7. This is why i voted leave. Didn’t want Brussels telling me I can walk cows down the road.

  8. Cows are nocturnal animals. They only feed at day time and are half blind. So this makes sense

  9. It may seem funny but…

It was a ban between 10:00 till 19:00 and was aimed at London.

This law only applied in London – not too unfamiliar to those who are aware of the congestion charges in metropolitan areas.

It was introduced in 1867 To tackle challenges of Victorian London which grew from 1.7 million people, to 3.3 million (at the time of the law) and it would reach 6.5 million people by 1901 (Victoria’s death).

London’s sewage system was not updated since Roman times.

1858 had the great stink crisis and it was only updated by 1865. With further Health and Safety laws in 1870s.

So you can see why large herding animals that make a lot of poo were banned.

  10. Don’t forget ‘suspiciously handling salmon,’ too.

  11. Not true, I was taking a stroll with your mun just yesterday.

  12. So they can only take Susan to the flat roof pub after sunset?

  13. The reminds e of the sunset laws in the US. In the US there are a bunch of alws which says you’re not allowed to do a bunch fo stuff after sunset. Except “after sunset” actually means “for black people”.

Is this the oposite. It’s illegal for white people to walk cows down the street?

  14. Thursday last, 5pm. Stationary on the A684 for five minutes waiting for cattle to saunter into the milking yard.

Totally normal for Wensleydale & that’s fine by me.

  15. This is from 1867. Fine is 10 shillings per head.
A newer law from 1872 says it’s illegal to be drunk in a pub. A discarded old unused law you might think. But no. The law was changed in 1988 to include all places where alcohol is served. If you sell it, then you are also responsible for customers not getting drunk on the property.

Why mention law against being drunk? Because another 1872 law also prohibits being drunk while herding cows.

  16. To be fair, if it weren’t illegal, we’d be riding cows around everywhere purposefully for Thicktoks.
