Picture this: you’re waking up to the gentle waves crashing on the shore, through the ancient cliffs that tell stories of resilience and serenity. Would you move to Ireland’s secluded isles in exchange for $90,000 in your bank account?
Ireland’s “Our Living Islands” Program was launched in 2023, offering those who are willing to move to one of its scenic isles a hefty remuneration. There are about 30 islands off the coast that are not in private ownership.
This initiative aims to maintain the vibrant communities to “continue to live and thrive” for the years to come. For adventurous souls wanting to settle down far from the noise of the world, this is a perfect opportunity to experience life in Ireland, where the sunrise and sunset feel more personal.

Ireland Is Offering $90,000 To Move To Its Remote Isles

In 2023, Ireland launched its Our Living Islands Program, a 10-year national policy for its remote islands, where thriving communities remain vibrant and resilient. The program aims to sustain these communities and maintain their unique culture and heritage, and deep environmental richness.
This program has been extensively presented on the table and agreed upon by the islanders with five high-level strategic objectives to have sustainable and thriving communities in many years to come.
Our Living Islands Program
Objective 1
Revitalize population levels on the islands
Objective 2
Diversify island economies
Objective 3
Enhance health and well-being services
Objective 4
Empower island communities
Objective 5
Build smart, sustainable futures
Our coastal islands and their communities are an integral part of the fabric of rural Ireland. They are also an integral part of the state’s heritage and have a special significance in Irish culture. — Our Living Islands Program
The program aims to repopulate these secluded islands, encouraging the islanders to convince the people, particularly young adults, to “live, work, and raise families” on any of the islands that are part of the program.

The Proviso Of Ireland’s “Our Living Islands” Program
There are many reasons to check Ireland off your bucket list, and this program might just be the answer to doing just that. But it doesn’t come in handy.
As the islanders and the authorities have sat together for extensive consultations to successfully execute this initiative, there are conditions to follow before the government shells out the hefty $90,000 to anyone willing to move to the gorgeous Irish Isles.
The sum of $90,000 must be used on purchasing properties under the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant (Croí Cónaithe). The property must have been constructed before 1993 and has been vacant for at least two years. The money can also be used for the renovation of the purchased property.
This program is also not intended for “immigration” because it requires you to be a resident of Ireland, and the easiest way is to acquire a “Stamp 0” visa, targeting retirees or anyone who can prove a good financial income of at least $50,000 a year, with access to a lump sum for emergencies. If you’re a dual citizen, better.
It’s also worth noting that the Isles are remote and are not connected to any bridges or causeways to the mainland. They’re also “cut off daily by the tide,” although there are permanent populations year-round and no private ownership.
Some of the islands included in this program are Arranmore, an island off the west coast of County Donegal in Ulster, and the largest inhabited island in the county, Bere Island in Bantry Bay off the Beara Peninsula in County Cork, the mountainous Clare Island in County Mayo, and Aran Islands’ Inishmore, where the 2022 film “The Banshees Of Inisherin” took place.

The Action Plan For The “Our Living Islands” Program

Of course, to effectively execute the program, the government has an Action Plan in place for the period 2023 to 2026, with 80 time-bound actions that need to be implemented by stakeholders through the state agency.
Former Minister Heather Maud Humphreys said that the Action Plan ensures that the islands have proper and good infrastructure, particularly “water, roads, and piers,” and supports the communities to develop remote working facilities. The ten-year policy is committed to providing and sustaining “a bright and sustainable future” for the island communities.
Our Living Islands [program] contains 80 actions which are designed to support and empower our island communities and the people living there. It’s all about improving housing, better access to essential services in health and education, delivering high-speed broadband, and further developing our outdoor amenities, which will in turn increase tourism and support sustainable island communities.

To date, there have been action plans completed, including the adequate delivery of high-speed broadband to broadband connection points, digital hubs, and schools on islands.
The new Multi-annual Rural Water Programme has also been launched, which provides quality, reliability, and efficiency of water services for rural dwellers, including the offshore islands.
The construction of a new helipad on Inishturk, Co Mayo, has also been completed.
