Malta women’s national football team has officially secured a historic promotion to League B in the UEFA Women’s Nations League after winning against Cyprus with a scoreline of 1-0.
This victory is an important milestone as the team hopes to reach the 2027 World Cup qualifiers, which was achieved in front of a record number of fans at the National Stadium in Ta’ Qali.
The attendance of 1,205 fans exceeded the record of 1,053, which was registered when Manchester United played Birkirkara in 2023.
Haley Bugeja scored the decisive goal in the first half, making in her 24th in 40 appearances for the national team.
Unfortunately, Bugeja will miss the team’s next match against Andorra after being shown her second yellow card.
Haley Bugeja’s first-half strike was all Malta needed to edge past Cyprus in a crucial UEFA Nations League showdown.
The team needed to win to secure a promotion to Europe’s second tier with one game to go against Andorra.
Following this game, Malta is in first place in League C Group 2 with 12 points, meaning that the team is leading the category by 5 points.
Malta’s political leaders congratulated the team on this historic feat, with President Myriam Spiteri Debono and Prime Minister Robert Abela who met with the players and passed on their well wished after the match.
