15. A saint who was in charge of all the finances of the Roman Christian church was demanded to bring all of the churches riches to the emperor or die. In return the saint asked for 3 days to gather the most valuable treasures the church owned, which they agreed to. The saint made haste to sell everything of value on those 3 days and help secure the escape of as many Christian’s as possible before his time was up. When the 3 days passed the saint arrived at the Roman palace with a huge group of all the cities poor, maimed and diseased, people which the Romans regarded as the lowest in society, and said “these are the greatest treasures the church has to offer” furious at this show of defiance, the Roman emperor ordered the saint to be slowly roasted alive on an iron grill. What happened next shocked the entire Romans, while the saint was being roasted alive instead of screaming he was absolutely calm and even smiling. This shocked the core of even the most experienced Roman soldiers who were watching. His most famous words during that time were “I’m done on this side, turn me over and eat.” He showed no signs of pain until he peacefully passed away despite the horror of what he was enduring. His name was Saint Lawrence.
