Sweden’s ruling party begins internal debate on joining NATO

  1. Sweden has a general election in September. Absolutely nothing is going to be decided one way or another until after the dust settles on that.

  2. If it’s true that Finland will be joining this spring and most likely around june then Sweden doesn’t really have much time for internal debate.

Also, they just begun? Surely they’ve been debating this at least for a few weeks now since the invasion of Ukraine.

  3. It’s good to know they are taking their sweet time but when it comes to making southern Europe accept policy changes instead of money they hurry them up.

None of this will be forgotten. Germany as well will face a huge deal of criticism when next economic crisis catches them on the side of the guarantor

  4. Oh we’re joining alright. The leading right party (Moderaterna) has turned a NATO membership into a big question in the upcoming election this fall and the ruling left (Socialdemokraterna) sees this as a way of removing one of the big factors in them loosing the election. The public opinion has swinged towards being open for a NATO membership as well even though the left has said no for so many years.
