Northumberland is a hidden gem

  1. Highlights are Bamburgh Castle (photo 4), the massive beach next to it (photo 5), Berwick-upon-Tweed (photos 8 and 9) and the Northumberland flag (photo 14). I was surprised to see that flag in a lot of places around the county.

Berwick-upon-Tweed in particular was interesting. It’s a border town that was fought over between Scotland and England at least 13 times. It’s now English but still feels quite Scottish – architecture, accent, food and overall vibe.

  2. I adore Northumberland, except Ashington 😀. The coast is unspoilt, the castles and forests are amazing.

  3. Remember to add in the Kielder Forest next time. The most beautiful part of the county. Proper special place.

  4. Yep, used to go on holiday to holy island when I was a kid, we’d rent a cottage there and spend a week just exploring Northumberland

This is gonna sound mental but it was the first place I ever saw a snail lol. The sand dunes near the causeway were also full of these weird moths that I’ve never seen since, they were black with red dots on their wings

  5. For Christ’s sake, don’t tell anyone.

The least visited National Park in England, the most castles of any county in England, the darkest skies in England, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Hadrian’s Wall and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the birthplace of Christianity in England.

The Land of the Far Horizons. The Secret Kingdom.
