We live in an adulty-adults neighborhood and it is required to mow the lawn. We personally like our lawn more natural, we have a huge variety of grasses and plants growing there and the birds love it, because more insects to catch. So I decided to mow the lawn all around and not in the middle. I think the neighbours hate it. What are your thoughts?

I like it
Older people are usually absolutely misinformed about such stuff so I wouldn’t care to care to explain I guess
Thats good!
do you own the plot? do what you want.
do you rent or lease the plot? pls have a look into your contract.
except from this: i like it.

I like the idea and what your neighbors think about it is frankly irrelevant. If you have your own garden you can do with it as you like.
Is it allowed? Probably not. The attorneys will have a fun time figuring out what “mowing the lawn” means. Costly for both sides.
Maybe you can put a sign that you care for birds and that s why is like that. It looks like unfinished work to people in your neighborhood.
Love it! I normally mow a patch to lay on but for the rest I just keep the flowers. I only mow it at the end of the summer.
Do you rent or own? What is the body governing that you have to mow?
Are you really required to mow your lawn?
Normally it is only required to keep it clean. So in my case I only do it 2 or 3 times a year. End of April, End of May and end of August most of the time. Of course the old people don’t like it, but I am on top of that.
A good tip: I ordered a “This is a happy bee place and I keep it natural”-sign for 5€ on Amazon and placed it in the middle of my lawn. If there is only one rule in Germany for older people it is “Bees are holy”. Never say something against bees… You are bad if you don’t like bees. A little bit sarcastic of course, but nobody tried to complain after placing that sign anymore.
Set up a sign with ‘Wildblumenwiese’ and stop mowing.
Love it.
On a random page for landlords I found this on the legal side of it:
basically saying that you can do whatever you like, and decide for yourself how often you mow the lawn, and turning it into an eco garden is allowed, too. If they want anything specific, they have to lay it out in the contract.
my family and i had a 1000sqm plot of land with a cute little hut on it for about 25 years.
we never mowed the lawn or did anything in the garden.
we wanted to have and see the pretty bees and the sweet bumblebees. – we wanted to have breakfast in and with the nature.
the executive board always tried to do something against us. but since we always paid everything on time, they could lick our asses.
I think you should leave it completely unmowed and just put up signs of the types of birds people should keep an eye out for.
love it! Just keep it like that.
It’s a trend in Germany to have a „Wiese“ meadow instead of „Rasen“ lawn. Maybe you can explain it better like that.
But I would still put effort into your garden especially if you are renting. I would keep it in a way so that it is still walkable with a maximum grass height and stuff like that.
Maybe you have already told us and I missed it, but is the garden/lawn shared by multiple apartments/houses or is this your own personal lawn (I read that you are renting). Depending on the answer my reply would widely differ.
If it is a shared garden and everyone has their turn to mow and equal rights to the space, deciding this on your own would not be a great idea – especially since the neighbours have kids if I read correctly and maybe would want the space for them to play football or do other outside activities.
If this is your own personal garden that comes along with whatever you rented do with it as you please. As long as it looks cared for and does not impact your neighbours (due to more annoying insects e.g.) you should be fine (I’m not a lawyer, so take what I say with a grain of salt).
“Blumenwiesen” are more and more becoming a common thing and most of the times I see them they are beautiful. You could plant colourful wild flowers in there to make it look even better and also signal the neighbours that this is a choice and not negligence.
For the future, I would suggest mowing a little meandering pathway through it and then let everything else grow big.
If it’s your lawn you can do whatever you want (well, to a reasonable degree obviously).if some grumpy old person tells you to mow the lawn just ignore them, they got nothing better to do in their lives.
Maybe leave it all long and only cut some ways in? Maybe a spot to sit in. I think that will look better
It doesn’t matter HOW you mow your lawn, it only matters AT WHAT TIME.
Permitted are Saturday afternoon, Sunday early morning and any day of the week between midnight and 6am.
there are signs for that unmowed lawn in germany:

Why is it required to mow?
I don’t care if my neighbours hate it, my lawn looks similar.
I don’t like the neighbours’ lawn, which looks like green painted concrete.
We live for 50 or more years with the fact, that we don’t like each other’s lawn.
No
Lobby to have it declared a sensitive ecological environment.
Sinus management is an ecological mowing method. It is a meandering mowing method, whereby part of the grass remains uncut. By mowing in winding paths and in phases, a diverse grassland is created. As a result, there is plenty to be found for butterflies, bees and birds all year round, thus contributing to biodiversity.
I think it matters if it’s a in plain view front lawn or a wether its more hidden behind a hedge
Wow I like this. Looks great. What would give this a more finished look would be corner stones (Rasenmähstein / Rasenmähkante) all around the patch. Then I would propose you get a seed pack of German wildflowers and sprinkle that in the patch. 🙂
Depending on your garden, you might actually qualify for a plaque like this one. Some people might respect this and actually see that you do indeed care about your garden

Alternatively buy some other unofficial wood or metal sign. You can get plenty online.
