Team Malta won a bronze medal in the cycling road race held yesterday morning in the streets of La Vella as the men’s riders’ selection managed to finish third overall to ensure they return home with a medal for their efforts in Andorra this week.
The Maltese team, formed by Daniel Bonello, Aidan Buttigiet, John Camilleri, Bernard Galea, Andrea Mifsud, and Jacob Schembri, managed a combined time of six hours, 16 minutes, and 58 seconds that placed them in third place.
Luxembourg won gold in 6:12.36 with Cyprus taking silver in 6:16:02.
The individual race was won by Luxembourg’s Mats Wenzel, who finished ahead of Alex Kirsch, with Monaco’s Kevin Velasquez taking bronze.
Malta’s Andrea Mifsud was eighth overall.
In the women’s race, the Maltese team finished fifth overall, with Luxembourg taking gold ahead of Cyprus and Andorra.
Luxembourg’s Marie Schreiber won gold ahead of fellow compatriot Nina Berton, with San Marino’s Valentina Venerucci.
Jessica Pratt was Malta’s first rider home in 13th place.
