Hello everyone,
I'm going to Bremerhaven to visit a friend soon & I thought I might as well leave a few days earlier & make a mini roadtrip out of it.
I have 2 questions I'd like to ask.
Firstly, is it legal to sleep in my car in public parking lots? Can the police knock on my window & fine me for it? Looked online but found conflicting info.
Secondly, does anyone have recommendations in this approximate route (doesn't have to be exactly on the road)? I'm not talking about big cities, but rather natural landmarks, castle's, unique or quirky historical places/museums etc. or even smaller towns that you think are worth stopping by for a max. a few hours.
I did look in the Niedersachsen wiki, but it seemed to be empty except for the big cities.
Thanks a lot!

This is not north east but north west of Germany.
Sleeping in your can won’t be an issue.
Zollverein is amazing! If you like industrial architecture.

If you want: take a trip to one of the east frisian islands.
In bremerhaven: the schiffahrtsmuseum with the willhelm bauer
*North-West, not North-East. Sorry

Just take a break on a highway rest stop and either lay in the back (if you have a hatchback) or the back seats with a blanket and pillow. Otherwise people might think you have a medical emergency.
I’ve done that for years on long journeys and no one ever bothered me. Don’t do that in the middle of town or a supermarket parking space… stop somewhere safe outside the town or village for some rest.
You could visit the roman museums in Kalkriese (Battle of the Teutoburger Forest) or Haltern am See to learn about little known endeavors of the ancient romans in Northern Germany.
Bremen offer so much stuff to see from the city history, Hanse, Migration Museum (into the New World) to Airbus SE and lots of technical stuff.
And maybe you want to leave the Autobahn at some point and travel via Bundesstraße to get a better feel for the smaller towns and villages. (e.g once you leave the Ruhrgebiet you travel via the B68 or B51 parallel to the A1. The B51 would even cut through a very beautiful region and take you all the way to Bremen.
What you displayed here in the pic is the North-West. The North-East is better known as Middle Germany.
Take a selfie infront of Bielefeld rathaus (if you can find it) 😛
The Klimahaus and Auswanderermuseum in Bremerhaven are great, unique museums. You can stop at former KZ Bergen Belsen on your way. The Dümmer See is a nice lake. I’d rather go via the A1 and stop in Münster, beautiful old town and palace, maybe before that explore Tecklenburg, a historical old town with ruins of a castle.
The [Archaeological park Xanten](https://apx.lvr.de/en/willkommen/willkommen_1.html) is close to the route. It is a former roman settlement and now an open air museum with reconstructed houses, an amphi theater ( mini colloseum) and several exhibitions over the year.
