One of the only places in this country with a cathedral that isn't a city. The spire is also a unique design.

I knew it was in Lancashire from the Beatles song.
I was Deputy Head choirboy at Blackburn Cathedral. In all I was in the choir for 8 years (6 -14yrs) and loved and hated it in equal measure. We had to be there five days a week for rehearsals and Service and we sang in some of the most beautiful buildings in the country. I’m a musician now and have those 8 years to thank for my classical training and musical knowledge.
The cathedral itself is beautiful and was extended in the late 50s early 60s hence the ‘beautiful’ spire. I remember one time in the 80s when the spire’s original stained glass started to deteriorate and fall to the floor inside the rear chapel and nearby choir stalls. That was a bit weird.
EDIT: I may be wrong about when the original St Mary’s Parish church was extended to create the cathedral so please feel free to correct me.
