  1. You can find more here:

Its official site where they have digital copies of photographs from finnish army from the ww2 era.

  2. I hate that my country allied with Nazi scum, but I also hate that I can’t think of any better choice that was available to Finland at the time. Had some mixed feelings reading Tuntematon again. Ultimately we made it through that war better than many other nations did, but I wish there had been a better way.

  3. The sign on 7 says “Finland”

The leaflet supposedly on 19 says «/military commissar/ is worse than an enemy – he shoots you in the back”.

I don’t know the translation tradition of politruk, but it is basically military commissar, their role was to control the actions of command of units/subunits from political perspective and do everything that was connected with the party line and propaganda in the army.

  4. Background info on a few images:

    4. A frozen Soviet soldier that was posed that way by Finnish soldiers, 1939.

    7. Finnish soldiers standing at the Soviet border, Финляндия = Finlyandiya. June 29th 1941.

    8. Finnish SS men of the Finnish Volunteer Battalion of the 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking return home after a 2 year stint in the Soviet Union, 1943.

    9. Finnish SS-Unterscharführer (sergeant) of the Nordland regiment, later 11th SS Panzergrenadier Division Nordland, speaking with a Finnish officer after returning home, 1943. The Nordland regiment later Nordland division was a unit specially made for Scandinavian volunteers like Danes, Norwegians and Swedes. After the Finnish SS Battalion was sent back home in 1943 the Fins who decided to remain in the SS mostly ended up in this division.

    10. Finnish SS men during their inauguration into the Waffen SS, 1941.

    11. Wounded soldier of the 1st Kompanie, 11th regiment, 6th SS Mountain Division Nord somewhere in Finland, 1944.

    12. Finnish men posing for a photo together with men of the 6th SS Nord in Kiestinki, Karelia, 22 August 1941. The SS man with the Suomi KP31 SMG infront is wearing a rare Palmentarn M38 camouflage smock.
