Am I the only one who doesn’t care about this? Feels like a non-story?
It’s actually low for a trinity college salary. Especially for the medical sector. There was an article about it a while ago.
Can someone who has been paying attention to this, explain why we’re supposed to care? Or is this a politicians care to care kinda thing
E: Love that a genuine request for explanation is taken out back and shot in the face
I dont care
The point is not that he gets a big salary, but that he’s seconded from Department of Health. So the department pay trinity back for his salary. Obviously it wouldn’t matter if trinity would have just paid it anyway (it’s all public money) but the problem is if trinity *wouldn’t* have paid him/created the job. In which case it’s just a way for the DOH to keep paying him the salary. Meanwhile his replacement will get the same salary, so we get one CMO for the price of two.
The controversy is that Tony is stepping down however he’s also moving into a secondment with the same terms and conditions and contract he’s currently on which implies he’s carrying over his salary. It would follow then that there would be two cmos being paid by the department of health, or taxpayer money.
It might indeed be clarified that that is not what’s happening but they’ve done a dreadful job of explaining it thus far.
Why are some people in these comments acting like this isn’t news? Tax payers are funding TWO CMOs effectively. Do you not care about your tax money? Are you ok with no oversight and cronyism/corruption? Jobs for the boys isn’t a problem? It’s no wonder FFG get away with such blatant BS when we have these apathetic voters. Actually hold on, I’d wager a lot of “non news” people dont even vote..!
The optics of this are awful even if you accept there is no skullduggery afoot. The sequence of events so far is that Holohan is not to give evidence at any enquiry into the Government’s response to the Pandemic. He has remained utterly silent and unquestioning of this decision. A few weeks later he is moved sideways out of his job into another academic post with the same salary and conditions which has been seemingly created and funded from within the Dept of Health, but which is located in TCD. The post doesn’t seem to have been advertised or any sort of competition held for potential applicants. Anyone observing this can only come to one of two conclusions- the above summary is a correct and fair reflection of events and sounds fishy, or the above is an unfair appraisal of circumstances which happened to occur simultaneously, and is bad PR management by the Government.
“Senior politicians yesterday expressed their disquiet”
Well, that’s that ticked off their list so.
Wasn’t me
Who gives a fuck? Seriously!
>Mr Watt, the department’s secretary-general, did not provide an answer when asked by Fine Gael senator Martin Conway about who signed off on Dr Holohan’s new Trinity role.
Mr Watt would do well to remember who pays his ludicrous salary, surely we can do better than this arrogant wanker.
Sorry for being out of the loop, . . . Why is he being moved aside ?
It looks like he wants to retire but doesn’t have the years. Seems like this arrangement was created to allow him to get them in a lower pressure setting, perhaps as an acknowledgement of the extreme workload, difficult personal circumstances and being forced to act as the government mudguard for a year and a half. Also don’t forget the personal abuse he’s had to endure as well.
I’m not going to get into the rights or wrongs of it, but that looks to me what’s going on.
Basically a made up job for one of the boys.
Me.
People asking why, it’s a payoff for taking the blame for all the lock downs and pandemic shite.
It’s pure corruption like!
Is there anyone who the public have changed opinions from positive to negative and back again more than Tony?
This figure would pay the salary of about six postdoc researchers, or the full economic cost of about four.
Jobs for the boys. Business as usual
Either a payoff to keep him quiet, or a payoff for him to be the fall guy, possibly both. I see no other reasonable explanation for him not just leaving a job completely he himself has said he has no interest in going back to, why would we pay for two CMOs?
Could get 8 PhD students actually doing research that’ll probably make more of a difference for the same money
This country is so corrupt. Blatantly so. Absolutely disgusting.
