My girlfriend had her blue bin nicked, so painted her brown bin blue, as the brown one wasn’t used much… I’m keen to see if the bin men empty it like normal

  4. You know you could have just called the council to report your bin was nicked, right? Some might charge but you’ve just spent your own paint and time and don’t even know if it’ll be collected.

  11. A neighbour of mine had their blue bin robbed and instead of replacing, they covered half their brown bin in blue tape and the bin men accept it.

  12. Our general rubbish bin is the wrong colour. Whipped the label maker out and printed “I identify as xyz colour bin”. They’ve never not emptied it.

    Brown here is garden waste and there is a yearly charge to have one.

  21. We have black bins for general waste. Black bin with blue lid for recycling. Small blue recycling tub for glass and green bin for garden waste. Baffles me that the whole country has a different approach 😂

  22. Just sent this to Manchester City council they thanked me for my information and will act accordingly with this matter, almost immediately i mean maybe even tonight.

Get a drill and using a marker pen on the sides and lid write in large numbers and letters your house number and post code then using the drill make holes all along the writing every inch or so this will deter any future thief, happened to my mums bins not any more. A marker pen will eventually fade.. source thats why they knicked the bins.

  26. Worked with a guy who said that when he moved house, he had to bring his bins with him. Who knew? Anyway, long story short, he transported the bins one by one in the back of his car and the black refuse bin had ‘bin juice’ that dripped (eewwww) into the car. Multiple cleanings did nothing and he drove around in winter with all the windows down for months.

  28. Does the old bin have any identifying marks on it? Some shitbag nicked my wheelie bin which had my door number on it. After walking up and down my own street in case the binmen had put it in the wrong place, I headed off to the ‘troubled’ part of the group of streets where I am and found it where I thought it would be.

  30. I just showed my bf who’s a bin man and he went “… yeah why?” After I read what you did he said he wouldn’t give a crap as long as it’s used as a recycling bin.

  33. I’m going to say no. My bin men won’t even take bins that have lids slightly open/overfilled. Any excuse not to take a bin. But best of luck and please update us.

  35. We’ve just had stickers but on our black bin that says no food waste. All food waste must go into the brown bin otherwise you can be issued a fine.
    I live in Northern Ireland.

  36. I had to ask my council for an extra blue bin once as we had a big family and thus the recycling got full quick.
    On the reason I put ‘Because my green bin refuses to identity as a blue bin’ and they approved it. 😀

  39. They will take it.  They will take anything with the same color, or with a sign that indicates what it’s for.

  40. I did this when I received a new larger Gray recycling bin, took the old one and spray painted it black, added a sticker on top saying general waste and was always collected as normal going forward!

    So hopefully should work the same for you!

  41. Love that idea. Our recycling bin was nicked and we had to wait 5 months for a replacement… it is free tho. should have painted our green bin brown at that rate since we never use it

  44. This is cruel. Bin men are highly sensitive to colour and would likely reject the bin, leaving it stranded and at risk from predators.

  45. I’ve noticed the handles are different on our black bin presumably to stop them going in the wrong lorry. Our brown and green are the same so you should be OK.
