  1. i know someone waiting a year. the system is so broken. is there a way to get these no shows?

  2. Ms Gray is particularly critical of people who hold a learner permit and who do not complete their test for a full licence.

She said: “A learner driver never has to turn up for the test.

“They can renew every year by simply sending the RSA €85, getting a booking date, not turning up and using that letter from the RSA to prove that they actually applied to book a test.”

Right, send them back to the start of the learner process if this happens. How much is a full programme of lessons these days?

  3. If you make booking a test required for renewal of learner’s permits, but not making sitting the test mandatory, this is what you end up with.

  4. A small number may be due to genuine emergencies, but the bulk are people who only book a test in order to get their umpteenth learner permit. They should increase the price of 3rd and subsequent permits to  €1000.

  5. 1.6%!!! A big deal for nothing! In 2024 there were 250k tests, if we assume the same it means so far we have 125k tests out of which 2k are no show, this means less than 2% are no show!

  6. An easy way to address this would be a deposit system along with the €85. Where people pay a few hundred (say €500) and only get it back if they do the test or have a genuine reason (medical cert, bereavement) to not attend.

  7. Why would someone want to stick on a learner permit indefinitely? Been mentioned loads here but.. why? You’d be driving on eggshells waiting to be caught.

  8. Ah yes another article to generate spin and deflect blame when the issue is systemic.

For context theirs 60 test centres in the country and this works out to 6-7 cancellations per month per centre which is a trivial amount considering the number of applicants
