Spain demands an arms embargo to compel the Gaza War’s termination. • FRANCE 24 English

Fargo. Spain, an outspoken critic of the war in Gaza, urging EU partners to follow its lead and stop selling weapons to Israel. Well, let’s cross to Madrid. We’re going to talk to our correspondent, Sarah Morris, who joins us from there now. Sarah, Spain really trying to influence, if you like, other EU countries to to rethink their policies amid the war in Gaza. That’s right. The foreign minister, Jose Manuel Alvarez, said the time for talking was over and it was time to take action against Israel because of that inhumane attack and uh renewed attack on Gaza. and he said that uh uh basically uh that um um that they would be calling on the EU allies for the immediate suspension of that EU cooperation deal with Israel. But also there should be no sale of arms to or from Israel. And he said that was a stance that Spain had maintained already uh since the invasion of Gaza. Uh he also talked about individual sanctions uh being imposed on uh West Bank settlers who are violent. there are already uh sanctions um imposed by the EU and Spain, but he said they should be extended and um essentially he was speaking after that conference that he had organized and hosted in Madrid on Sunday in which he persuaded Arab leaders to meet with members of the EU of for instance France, German, Germany and Italy and uh said that more and more of his EU EU new allies are in favor of what he’s advocating for. And it’s not the first time, is it Sarah, that Spain has pushed for further action on Israel. It certainly isn’t, sir. Stuart, because last year uh Spain led the way for for a number of countries in the European Union to recognize uh Palestinia on the basis of those uh borders prior to the 1967 war. He was joined by Ireland for instance and uh uh we’ve even seen recently that there has been a diplomatic spat with Israel over the Eurovvision entry because uh um the Israeli singer uh Yuval Raphael with her song New Day Will Rise. She actually uh came second, but she came first in the Spanish public vote. And um Spain and the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has actually said that they would like an audit of the counting system and they also want Israel to be banned. Pedro Sanchez, the socialist prime minister, said that it was double standards uh that Israel was allowed into that competition um because Russia had been banned after its invasion in Ukraine. and he said that that sent a bad message very tense relations uh between Israel and Spain even though the foreign minister Albertis insists uh that his stance is not against Israel that this is paving the way for peace in the Middle East and he says that allies must hang on to the idea of a viable two-state solution. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares called Sunday for an arms embargo on Israel. He also pressed for humanitarian aid to enter Gaza “massively, without conditions and without limits, and not controlled by Israel”, describing the territory as humanity’s “open wound”.   1. Israel is not moved by pressure over a year. Recognition of Palestine will mean nothing to Israel and Palestinians will still feel unfulfilled because they claim the entire land/Israel is for them.
    The war will not end until both agree to coexist.

  4. Hamas are, at this very moment, holding a Spanish citizen hostage. Spain: does nothing and demands an embargo on arms to the only people who are doing something. Damn… I feel sorry for Spaniards.

  8. Together with Ireland and Norway about the only European countries that developed a conscience. Nonetheless, most western countries' governments are just too fearfull of US RETRIBUTION. In other words, those client states, of US hegemony are not worthy of calling themselves souvereign countries. Do these countries even have some national integrity ?

  11. I think Spain should stop interfering with Israel's internal affairs. Israel has never bullied Spain, so don't do it to Israel.

  24. It won't ever end, it's the current front line in a 1000 year struggle over who owns the holy lands, who owns God, which religion is superior. Neither side will ever stop fighting until they have wiped out the other. It's a holy war folks the land keeps changing hands & they're all willing to die for the cause each committing atrocities then playing the victim when things don't go their way. Two State is a Western fantasy neither has any interest in sharing or defining boarders 100, 200, 300 years from now this conflict will still be raging on.

  29. Lol if only Spain would put as much effort into forcing Hamas to surrender, and release the Israeli hostages as it does in condemning and putting pressure on Israel. That would truly bring an end to the war. But they won't. Of course not. Spain has had a long history of antisemitism so their attitude to the Gaza War is not surprising in the least. Thank God the USA will always stand with Israel.
