Since coming to Estonia. The Sauna is my new favourite thing and I like it so much I made this. Still learning Estonian but, mulle meeldib saun. Even that phrase I have just been talking to my wife over why I can’t just say, ma meeldin sauna.

  1. I’m glad you are enjoying it mate. There are different ways to enjoy sauna, some prefer higher temperature and lower durations, others stay longer. Try different temperatures and make sure to have a way to tell the temperature in sauna. Just be mindful about the dangers, for example if you have heart problems then sitting in a high temperature might be harmful to your health. Some people also like going to sauna, staying there for a bit, running out quickly and jumping in soft snow or watersource (a coldish shower would work too) & then quickly go back to sauan. And again be mindful about your health, doing what I just said might put you at risk if you aren’t responsible. If you haven’t already, try throwing beer instead of water on the hot rocks. It will cause a very lovely smell (no /s, it really does smell nice). If you like it, then you can try and see how the smell that comes from it changes with different brands of beer. Note: I’m not promoting the consumption of alcohol 🙂

PS Like with consuming more alcohol, there are also some people who act like staying in sauna for longer, in a higher temperature will make you somehow a tougher man. That attitude has lowered over the years thankfully. So really, enjoy the experience & stay safe 🙂

  2. Saying “ma meeldin sauna” is like saying “me liking sauna” in english, it just isn’t right.

  3. Saunas are good, have to agree on that, but you cant say “ma meeldin sauna,” because if you say it like that then it would mean “I likes sauna”

  4. Hüva leili!

Also – “…why I can’t just say, ma meeldin sauna.” – literally translated, that would be something on the lines of “I am liked into a sauna” or “I am liked a sauna”, so does not compute, out of cheese error 😛 (or out of leil error). To be grammatically correct, you’d have to say “Mulle meeldib saun” – or you can boast that “Ma meeldin saunale” which would mean “(a) sauna likes me” 🙂

  5. Think of meeldima as a passive word. So instead of “I like sauna”, it’s more like “Sauna is liked by me”. Hope this helps! I’m glad you’re enjoying our sauna culture. Viska leili!

  6. Looks like a screen from a classic point and click adventure game. I think I have it figured out. You have to fill the bucket with water. Dip the hat into the water bucket. (cant use the hat in the bowl for some reason). Then hold the hat in the stove to make it steam. Wear the hat and then you can run out to scare the bad guys guarding the door.

  7. Do you have a place to swim next to the sauna? High heat sauna + swimming + repeat a few times leaves you with the best feeling in my opinion. For the best experience, cold water is recommended. During winter you can just dig a hole in the ice. Feels very good, but be careful.
