France’s Macron Indonesia visit strengthens strategic ties • FRANCE 24 English

Amid a show of pomp and military fanfare, Emanuel Mron bestowed his Indonesian counterpart Proo Subanto with France’s highest military or civil award. In the name of the French Republic, we elevate you to the dignity of Grua. The marbo is an ex-general accused of rights abuses in the late 1990s. He was discharged from the military over his role in the abductions of democracy activists, but denied the allegations and was never charged. The French president presented PBO with the award while touring a military academy, a fitting way to round out his visit to Indonesia after the leaders on Wednesday signed a preliminary defense pact. Nron said the agreement could lead to the purchase of more military equipment from Paris, building on a 7 billion euro deal signed in 2022 that included an order for 42 Rafal fighter jets. Indonesia has the second largest military spending in Southeast Asia, a market that France is seeking to capitalize on. The French are are well equipped to fill a a a role in this market. America is looking very uh uh unreliable and I think the French are willing to give into some of the Indonesian demands about technology transfer and license production. It wasn’t just defense on the agenda. Mron hailed more than 17 billion euros of deals signed by French companies including one with French mining giant ER to explore the establishment of a strategic investment platform in the nickel sector. Indonesia holds the biggest known reserves of the metal which is key for electric vehicle batteries. The country is Macron’s second stop on a tour of Southeast Asia aimed at boosting engagement and presenting France as a balancing power amid the growing influence of the US and China. The president is also in Singapore this Thursday and on Friday will deliver the keynote address at Shangriila Dialogue, Asia’s premier security forum.

Emmanuel Macron visited Indonesia from May 27 to 29, 2025, to mark 75 years of diplomatic ties and reinforce France’s presence in Asia. The visit focused on boosting cooperation in defense, trade, and energy, with several key agreements signed to deepen the strategic partnership.

It reminds me of our artist's story when she was in France and some grandma curiously asked her "where are you from?" and she said "Indonesia" and the grandma then told her "so you live in the temple" and she's just so speechless. It turns out that Indonesia always portrayed as Borobudur Temple in the French pamphlet 😂
