>Prime Minister Keir Starmer has criticised the SNP’s opposition to Trident, labelling it the “single most important part” of the UK’s defence capability.
>Speaking from BAE Systems in Glasgow as the UK Government publishes its strategic defence review, the prime minister said the country was “moving to warfighting readiness”.
>He reiterated his government’s commitment to spend three per cent of GDP on defence at some point in the next parliament but refused to put a precise date on when that target would be met.
>And asked about the upcoming Scottish Parliament byelection in South Lanarkshire, which is expected to be a tight race due to discontentment among voters with the Labour government, the prime minister said his “first priority” was the safety and security of the country.
…
>The Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse byelection takes place on Thursday. It was called following the death of SNP minister Christina McKelvie, who held the seat since its creation in 2011.
>Scottish Labour had been hopeful of its chances of winning the seat, given it won the near-equivalent Westminster seat in the general election last summer, but the race between it and the SNP is neck and neck. Reform UK is also expected to perform well, but Starmer dismissed the party’s chances of winning, saying it was “only Labour that could beat the SNP”.
>He accused Nigel Farage’s party of planning to spend billions on “uncosted” pledges. He said: “That is what Liz Truss did, that’s what blew up the economy, that’s what led to the infliction of harm on working people in Scotland, whether it’s their mortgage, their prices. I’m not prepared ever to let that be inflicted on Scotland ever again.
>“That’s why I’m absolutely clear on my priority, which is the safety and security of everybody in Scotland and making sure that we never have the prospect in Scotland again of a Westminster government that blows up their finances.”
>On defence spending, the prime minister said this was a “once in a generation reform”, which would include the building of six new munitions factories in the UK, investment in new technology including drones, and 12 new attack submarines.
>He added: “We are moving to warfighting readiness as the central purpose of our armed forces. When we are being directly threatened by states with advanced military forces, the most effective way to deter them is to be ready – and frankly to show them that we’re ready to deliver peace through strength.”
As if anyone gives a shite about what he thinks.
Alright, store it in England then
Pot calling the kettle black ….
It is a bad policy tbf. As is their general opposition to civilian nuclear power.
A natural consequence of the SNP being led by a CND vet for too long.
Tbh defence is one if the areas where they are almost incoherent- supposedly believing in NATO and the 2% budget but not wanting to produce any munitions, weapons or warmachines.
It’s worse than the irish position.
Pretty low-hanging fruit, but he’s right to call it out. I’m baffled anyone would look at the state of the world right now and come to the conclusion that British unilateral disarmament makes anything better.
One of the problems a lot of us up here in the frozen north have with Trident is that it is parked 25 miles from Scotland’s largest city and would inevitably be a prime target in any future war.
I’m at odds with having Nuclear weapons in Scotland.
On the one hand it provides additional levels of security for Scotland that wouldn’t be afforded to England and Wales as the MoD are going to put a lot more money into defending Faslane as the surrounding area in the event of any conflict.
But on the other hand if we end up at war with another Nuclear armed nation and they decide to Nuke Faslane the fallout will impact around 70-80% of the Scottish populace.
Aye because London would happily let nukes park down the coast
That’s cause he’s a W⚓
Scotland would rather sell everyone out to Russia or china than side with England. Such a stupid approach
One of the few reasons I have regularly tactically voted SNP is due to their consistent position against nuclear weapons. I know others of a similar mind. Let Starmer appeal to the right wing, it has been going disastrously for him so far.
Oh so he does know that Scotland exists
People saying it would be a target are missing the point. In any nuclear conflict, Glasgow would likely be targeted anyway whether or not Trident is stationed nearby or not. These last few years have once again demonstrated the UK’s need for a nuclear deterrent. Ukraine gave up their nuclear weapons after the Cold War under a false promise from Russia and look what happened.
Piss off, Starver.
Based
Kid Starver is hellbent on being a war time PM. So anything he criticises is prob the correct side to be on. Russia, China, Iran ain’t a threat it’s our own corrupt governments who are absolutely shafting us
You’d think these Brits would want their American nukes in England given how much they love them
Getting rid of instruments of indiscriminate civilian slaughter can only be a good thing.
