Ukraine rejects visit by German President Steinmeier

  1. I don’t blame Ukraine for not wanting to meet him or anyone. Prove you that you are serious and do something. Then you can have your photo op.

  2. Real talk:

This is absolutely humiliating for Steinmeier and I sure fucking hope he gets the message:

You can’t ride two horses with one ass.

Again, Ukraine shows a lot more integrity than many other Western nations have done so far.

  3. I doubt President Steinmeier meant any [ill-will towards Ukraine with these remarks](https://www.dw.com/en/germanys-steinmeier-angers-kyiv-with-his-comments-on-nord-stream-wwii/a-56515956) but they’re legitimate grounds for refusing to receive the *Bundespraesident.* I think President Zelensky should have let the visit go ahead myself, but I wouldn’t presume to tell him or the people of Ukraine what to do.

    > Ukraine’s ambassador to Berlin on Tuesday slammed “questionable historical arguments” made by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier regarding the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

    > Andriy Melnyk’s reaction came as officials from Ukraine and many other European countries have grown increasingly frustrated with the German government’s insistence on completing the project and effectively doubling the amount of gas that Germany imports from Russia.

    > “For us Germans, there is another dimension,” the president said, noting that June will mark 80 years since the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union. He said 20 million Soviet citizens were killed in World War II.
    > “There have been phases of fruitful partnership, but even more times of terrible bloodshed,” Steinmeier said.
    > “This does not justify any wrongdoing in Russian politics today, but we must not lose sight of the bigger picture,” he added. “Yes, we live in the presence of a difficult relationship, but there is a past before and a future after.”

  4. Considering how rapidly Germany has changed its stance on sending weapons to nations in conflict (and allowing others that buy weapons from them to do the same) for Ukraine and Ukraine alone (which, AFAIK, has been their official policy for more than twice as long as Ukraine has existed), this move is so extremely disrespectful that it’s baffling and will serve Ukraine no good (especially since Steinmeier has renounced and apologized for his Russian links).
