It’s a shame it’s taking a war for a more rapid measures to handle the climate crisis.
Either way, Demir has previously stated not to be interested in reaching climate goals, so not surprising she and her party aren’t interested in this either.
> Vlaams minister van Omgeving Zuhal Demir (N-VA) kon zich niet vinden in de eis om het Europese ETS-systeem (emissiehandelssysteem) uit te breiden en zo sneller klimaatneutraal te worden. Dat zou volgens haar resulteren in een stijging van de energiefactuur met minstens 460 euro per jaar voor “een gemiddeld Vlaams gezin”.
So if you thought Zuhal was resisting new gas plants because of environmental concerns, think again.
I really think she’s a decent minister for environment (or at least ten times better than our previous one), but her climate policy is basically a huge flaming middle finger to everyone who is younger than forty. Very weird.
What a terrible human being. Along with everyone else that seems to think that preventing climate changes is just some kind of “political decision” that we can either do, or not do to please voters.
What a Joke.
Don’t forget to follow Tinne Vander Straeten tips:
Your freezer must be -18°C
Isolate your house or appartment (ask the landlords to do some stuff, it is your problem anyway)
Cook food only using a microwave (it is 4 times less energy consumption!)
Close all the doors and only heat the room where you’re at or just wear wartmth clothes
Sell your car(s)
That’s it, you’re now an envirnomental championen !
So her stance is ‘gas is already very expensive, so to motivate investments in other ways to generate electricity, the reform will not help a lot and just make the average household pay 460 more euro’
That’s a lot more nuanced take on the matter. So it’s not about them not wanting to reduce gas, it’s about them not wanting to make it even more expensive, so the headline is misleading. If her statement is correct, I could agree with it.
By the way, what happens to the money from the ETS system?
Why do we need different environment ministers at the regional / community level again and not just one at the federal level ?
As expected
Thanks, I just installed a new gas kettle.
She’s such an “oh no, that’s too haaaaaard, I don’t wanna” climate politician. She’s decent on other themes, sure, but the fact that she doesn’t seem to comprehend the gravity of the situation and actively diminishes it, man, it’s just completely proving what I expected her to do…
I’ll go solar and electric, no matter what. And plant as much trees as I can. Isolation is already ok.

Considering that we are all in all on track with the reduction of greenhouse gas-emissions I don’t understand this kind of outrage believing that we can slightly influence global warming..
Go and join the fight against things that are bothering us and that we can actually influence. Light pollution for example or aircraft noise.
Tuurlijk ni. Wij gaan juist gas centrales bouwen lmao
Not really, it’s Flemish sabotage because Belgium wanted to support.
I mean, is that surprising? The current plans of the government (up until this year) was closing down nuclear and replacing it with gas specifically. If your plan is to increase gas consumption specifically, you can’t co-sign this call because it goes contrary to your plan.
Granted, they have pedaled back on the nuclear exit plans a bit in recent months – but the end goal is still to replace nuclear with gas – and (yes) a bit of green energy (I mean, the gas plants haven’t been scrapped at all).
I always found that a bafflingly dumb decision (due to lower supply of gas than any other fossil fuel resource, gas not being more green than nuclear and more gas consumption in EU means more dependence on Russian gas, which is never good).
But yeah, that’s not just Ms Demir’s fault, or the Green party’s fault. It’s the fault of every single party that had a minister or influence on the position of Energy & environment in the past few decades. Belgium’s energy & environment long term plans have been shit for a *long* time now.
Uitstekende beslissing. Die klimaatgekte in België is al absurd genoeg.
