After a devastating accident, doctors weren’t sure if he’d ever walk again, but his determination proved otherwise. From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight. Good evening everyone. Thanks so much for joining us on this Sunday. I’m Lindseay Davis. We do begin tonight with breaking news. Police are responding to what the FBI is calling a targeted terror attack at an outdoor pedestrian mall in Boulder, Colorado. Local law enforcement and FBI agents are on the scene. Several injuries have been reported and authorities say some may have been set on fire. The governor of Colorado released a statement saying he is closely monitoring what he described as a heinous act of terror. Police have evacuated several blocks in and around the mall and are asking people to avoid the area. A suspect is in police custody. This happening during a pro-Israel demonstration. ABC’s Mola Laney leads us off tonight. Boulder police responding to calls of people being set on fire during a peaceful demonstration in support of Israeli hostages. There’s multiple mixed reports about if people are on fire or not. We’re getting lots of 911 calls. The group meets regularly and is affiliated with the organization Run for their lives. One of their leaders says a man was waiting for them and began throwing a box of bottles at them, saying several people were set on fire. One an elderly woman. He yelled expletives about the Jewish people, about Zionists, free Palestine, and whatnot. It reminded me of what happened in Washington DC a couple weeks ago. These images of a man holding what appears to be two Molotov cocktails before being tackled by police. Authorities say they have a suspect in custody. FBI personnel assisting local police on the scene. Director Cash Patel says the agency is investigating the incident as an act of terror and targeted violence. But local police are not going that far, saying it’s too early to characterize what kind of attack it is. Well, Lindsay, House Speaker Mike Johnson condemning the attack tonight, calling it heartbreaking and deeply disturbing. And we’re told President Trump has been briefed about the incident. Lindsay Mola, thank you. Now to the air quality alerts as the wildfire smoke from Canada blankets skies across the upper Midwest. A state of emergency in Canada as thousands are forced to evacuate their homes. Firefighters are battling more than 170 wildfires. That smoke is casting a haze over the skies in places like Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and parts of Minnesota and Michigan are under air quality alerts. And the southern plains in central US are bracing for yet another round of dangerous storms. Here’s ABC’s Christian Cordderero. Tonight, more than 170 active wildfires across Canada, forming dense smoke visible from space as it drifts deep into the US. Air quality considered unhealthy across parts of the upper Midwest. That wildfire smoke continuing to be an issue even into Monday. Hazy skies over millions of people from Duth to De Moines. For parts of North Dakota and Minnesota, officials telling residents to keep windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors and if possible run central air conditioning. It’s a big fire, so it’s pretty bad. The massive wildfires burning hundreds of thousands of acres, prompting the US to deploy more than 150 firefighters and air tankers to help battle the flames. The smoke now making its way into the south just days after tornadoes ripped through. An EF2 touched down in Kentucky, according to the National Weather Service, killing one person and injuring at least 14. And another tornado in Henry County, Georgia, injuring two. Officials there now changing the county’s severe weather alert system after several residents said they didn’t hear the outdoor sirens or get warnings on their phones until after the tornado hit. Neighboring states getting heavy rain and wind now bracing for hurricane season officially starting today. Lindseay Noah predicts a more active than usual hurricane season and some scientists are concerned staffing cuts by the Trump administration could impact the AY’s ability to forecast and prepare for future storms. Lindsay Christian, thank you. Let’s get right to meteorologist Danny Beckram from our New York station WABC. Hi Danny, tell us where this smoke is heading. Lindsay, the upper Midwest has been stuck under the smoky haze for several days now and it hangs around into the start of the work week. Today, the worst of the smoke stretching from Fargo across the state of Minnesota, where an air quality alert is still in effect. Tomorrow, it shifts east across the Great Lakes down into Illinois. But a new system taking shape in the central US could finally help push that smoke back north while also fueling severe storms. Tonight, that threat focused in parts of Texas with damaging wind and large hail possible from Houston up to Dallas on Monday, targeting the Plains, then shifting east from Texas to Wisconsin on Tuesday. East of the storm, a big warm-up is the weather story. to the east coast turning up the heat by midweek. Lindsay about to feel a lot like summer. Danny, thank you. Overseas now to Ukraine launching a massive drone strike on Russian airfields. The attack allegedly destroyed more than 40 Russian planes. It took more than a year to execute and was personally supervised by Ukrainian President Zalinski. This is a new round of ceasefire talks are set to start on Monday in Turkey. Here’s ABC’s Marcus Moore. Tonight, Ukraine landing a punishing blow against Russia with a surprise drone attack, dubbed Operation Spiderweb, targeting key airfields and strategic nuclear capable bombers deep inside Russia. More than 40 aircraft ablaze after the highly sophisticated operation was launched Sunday. Ukrainian sources giving ABC News details of the attack that was a year and a half in the planning. The drones were transported to Russia inside what looked to be shipping containers with retractable RS that could be opened remotely. The drones seen here flying out on their mission. The Ukrainians did not inform the US ahead of time. The high-tech planes worth billions of dollars now in ruins and will take years to replace. It looks like around 30% or higher of their strategic bombers uh were destroyed. Some of these drones were as low as $500, taking out million-dollar aircraft. It was a blow tactically. It was a blow strategically and it was a blow politically. Elsewhere in Russia, officials said explosions from an alleged terror attack caused two bridges to collapse. One causing a train derailment. Russian officials said at least seven people were killed and more than 60 injured. Earlier, Russia launching strikes of its own across Ukraine. The largest air assault since the war began. At least 12 people killed and dozens hurt. The apparent escalation in this war comes as President Trump has criticized Putin’s attacks on civilians and grown increasingly impatient with both sides, threatening to walk away from peace talks scheduled to resume in Turkey tomorrow. Lindsay, a quick word on Ukraine’s surprise strike. Russia calling it a terrorist attack. And tonight, President Zalinsky claimed that the quote unquote office for this operation was right next door to one of the headquarters for Russia’s security service. Lindsay, all this on the eve of renewed peace talks. Marcus, thank you. Dozens were killed and hundreds injured near an aid distribution center in Gaza. Health officials and witnesses say Israeli forces opened fire on the crowds. Let’s bring in ABC’s chief foreign correspondent Ian Panel in Tel Aviv. Ian, what are you learning tonight? Yeah, Lindsay. I mean, lots of confusion about who carried out this attack. It happened near a US-run food distribution site in southern Gaza. Now, aid agencies calling it a massacre, but as I say, unclear who pulled the trigger. Hamas and eyewitnesses from the scene accusing Israeli troops of shooting at people. The US aid company that actually runs this site, denying that there was an incident at all. But hospitals in the area overrun with patients with gunshot wounds. Israel conducting an investigation, a provisional investigation, later saying that its troops didn’t fire at civilians in or near this site. But at the same time, an Israeli military official telling ABC News its troops did fire warning shots towards what it calls several suspects in the vicinity, which also while also insisting uh that there’s no connection between the two. A senior Israeli source though blaming Hamas for the attack. Lindsay Ian, thank you. Back here in the US, the urgent search for answers after a deadly mass shooting at a house party in North Carolina. One person is dead and 11 others injured. Authorities say nearly 100 people had gathered, mostly teens. Just moments ago, police said at least 80 shots were fired and there may be more than one shooter. Here’s ABC’s Morgan Norwood. Tonight, investigators swarming a North Carolina neighborhood after a deadly mass shooting. One dead after a house party full of high schoolers turned fatal, 11 others injured. And today, investigators revealing they’re looking for multiple suspects. Our investigation indicates more than one shooter was involved in the incident. We are still working to determine when they arrived, how they arrived, and what the reasoning was. Police today identifying the man who was killed as 58-year-old Shawn Patrick Hood. One official telling ABC News police responded earlier to a noise complaint. Shots fired after a dispute. The call coming in just before 1:00 a.m. from a home in Hickory just northwest of Charlotte. Two patients have been shot in the leg at the bullet patient here that’s been shot in the chest. Um inside EMS finding victim after victim emergency crews desperately calling for backup. We’re overwhelmed out here. I will need both aircraft. Outside, frantic parents scrambling to find their children. I’ve had probably about 10 15 cars trying to pull up here uh asking for kids. It’s mostly parents looking for children. Authorities say as many as 100 people, mostly teens, were inside when those shots rang out. It appears to us that both pistols and rifles were involved. Police say at least 80 shots fired during the chaos. Two of the injured remain in critical condition. And Lindsay, authorities don’t have anyone in custody just yet, but they say they believe the suspects were targeting someone inside that house party. Tonight, the FBI joining that investigation. Lindsay Morgan, thank you. Now to politics and the battle over President Trump’s so-called big beautiful bill. Republicans are squabbbling over whether it will boost the economy or add trillions to the nation’s debt. Here’s ABC senior White House correspondent Selena Wang. Tonight, President Trump’s allies defending his so-called One Big Beautiful bill against opposition from fellow Republicans. The One Big Beautiful bill is a big first step to provide relief for the American people. Speaker Johnson now urging his Senate colleagues to get on board after the bill narrowly passed the House by just one vote, but they’re pushing back. Well, the math doesn’t really add up. Budget Hawk Senator Ran Paul says there are enough unconvinced Republicans to block its passage. I think there are four of us at this point, and I would be very surprised if the bill at least is not modified in a good direction. At issue, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office predicting the bill could add $3.8 trillion to the federal deficit over eight years, but Johnson flat out rejecting that. It’s not going to add to the debt. The bill would extend Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, end federal taxes on tips and overtime pay, spend nearly $50 billion to resume construction of a border wall, and slash funding for Medicaid. They’re cutting Medicaid, throwing 15 million people off their healthcare in order to fund a tax cut for the super wealthy and for corporations. Um, that is just fundamentally immoral. Republican Senator Joanie Ernst facing backlash after she dismissed those concerns at a town hall in Iowa. People are not well. We all are going to die. [Music] Erns then giving a sarcastic apology on social media. So I apologize and I’m really really glad that I did not have to bring up the subject of the tooth fairy as well. and Lindsay. The CBO estimates these Medicaid cuts could leave more than 8 million Americans without health insurance, but the White House insists no one is losing their coverage. Despite all this push back, Republicans are aiming to get this bill to President Trump’s desk by July 4th. Lindsay Selena Wang from the White House. Thank you. Outrage tonight after a Massachusetts high school student was detained by ICE agents on his way to volleyball practice. And tonight, the governor of Massachusetts is demanding answers. Here’s ABC’s Kajachi. Tonight, shock and sadness in Milford, Massachusetts. An 18-year-old high school student now in ICE detention, according to school officials. Friends of the teen telling ABC affiliate WCVB agents arrested him early Saturday morning as he was driving to volleyball practice with teammates. He is not a criminal. Um he he’s a member of his community and he’s never done anything wrong. his coach describing the junior as exceptional. Our athlete who was detained, it may be the friendliest person in the school. Um, every day, no matter how he felt, he always had a smile on his face. Friends and family telling our affiliate Milford is the only home the detained student has ever known after moving there at 6 years old. Milford’s superintendent writing in a statement, “We are all distraught by this news and that the school district plays no part in immigration enforcement and supports all students, including those who are immigrants to the United States.” Milford’s local police chief also saying his department was not involved in the arrest. Today, the community gathering for a peaceful protest. Now, on graduation day for the school, the Massachusetts governor demanding that ICE provide immediate information about why he was arrested, where he is, and how his due process is being protected, and writing, “The Trump administration continues to create fear in our communities, and it’s making us all less safe.” Lindsay, this arrest comes as the Trump administration is aggressively expanding its immigration enforcement powers across the country. On Friday, the Supreme Court temporarily allowing the administration to end protections for over 500,000 immigrants enrolled in the Biden era program. Lindsay Ike, thank you. Now to what police are calling the suspicious deaths of two high school campers in Arizona. Their bodies were discovered in a remote area of the Phoenix area earlier this week. Here’s ABC’s Zaren Shaw with the new details coming in tonight. Tonight, an urgent investigation into two high school students found shot dead in an Arizona National Forest. Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office now launching a homicide investigation, saying the circumstances surrounding their deaths are being treated as suspicious. He was just a really nice guy. The bodies of 18-year-old Pandora Jewels and her 17-year-old friend were found early Tuesday by sheriff deputies near Mount Ord, a remote area northeast of Phoenix known for camping. Their community in shock, grieving, and demanding answers, leaving flowers, candles, and messages at a mountain vista they say was special to the teens. I’m really sad. It’s like it doesn’t really feel real. Pandora’s mom sharing this image of her hiking, calling her a bright light in this world, who lived life in a big way. Officials are asking anyone with any information to come forward. Crisis counselors and psychologists are also being made available at the school. Lindsay Zaren, thank you. Still much more ahead on World News Tonight this Sunday, including a dangerous incident at a major airport. How a toddler ended up on a luggage conveyor belt and what’s black and white and running wild on the interstate. How a zebra brought traffic to a standill. Next tonight, a toddler was rescued from a dangerous situation at Newark Airport in New Jersey thanks to some quick thinking by two officers. The 2-year-old had stepped onto a baggage conveyor belt Wednesday as the child’s mother was booking a flight. The officers then jumped onto the conveyor belt themselves and found the toddler just ahead of the baggage x-ray machine. The child was not harmed. When we come back, the urgent search for an escapee all covered in stripes. to the index tonight. The southern US may be in for a rare treat. Scientists say it could be possible to see the green, pink, and purple northern lights as far south as Oklahoma or Alabama. That’s due to a geomagnetic storm that causes charged particles from the sun to interact with the Earth’s magnetic field. And in Rutherford County, Tennessee, the sheriff’s office put out an alert for a zebra. Yes, a zebra. It was apparently someone’s pet and broke free on Saturday. Deputies closed down I24 for a short time. The zebra disappeared into some woods and at last word has not yet been found. When we come back, America strong. A young graduate takes the most important steps of his life. Finally tonight, America strong. Four months ago, 18-year-old Will Whitten suffered a serious spinal cord injury in an accident while driving near Shreveport, Louisiana. Resolved to walk by graduation day, Will began intensive rehab and it led to this magical moment at the Hton High School commencement. Will steps were priceless, leading him, no doubt, to a brighter future. GMA first thing in the morning. David Mure right back here tomorrow night. I’m Lindseay Davis in New York. Have a great evening. Good night. Thank you for making World News Tonight with David Mure, America’s most watched newscast.
