Absolutely mindblowing that people can’t see that they will financially struggle when it comes to hosting a family, especially with the rising cost of living anyway being more expensive without extra mouths to feed in your house. I fully understand people want to help others but when it comes to putting you and your family under financial strain to do this then you should really reconsider your actions. This could go on for months yet so it’s going to really hit people hard.

  2. How could people not see this. I love that people want to help and felt this was the best way. Reality check, this war isn’t over in 3months, you could have a family for 3years (due to housing). They receive SW €200? But there not obligated to hand over anything to the home owner. (I do hope most do)
The home owners probably feels they need to drive them everywhere and cook for them. That’s ok for short term.

But this is long term and opening your house was always going to do this.

  3. Charity people. Charity. It doesn’t entitle you to subsidies from anyone. That’s why it’s called charity.

  4. They been treated the same as EU citizens, they entitled to a cess the full welfare system, unemployment benefits, child benefits HAP etc.

  5. I withdrew my pledge due to this. I wasn’t looking to get rich off this by any means, but if I’m by myself, I’m sitting on an electric blanket with a duvet on top so the oil lasts longer and the heating’s only coming on so I have hot water for the bath. It’s no way to treat people who’ve just lost everything, they’ll need a warm room for themselves and their kids. I go to the shop maybe once every two weeks and that’s the only time I’ll use my car. I simply can’t afford to help without getting some assistance. Maybe the government will figure out that people need that assistance before everyone’s stuck in tents, but I’m not holding my breath.

  6. The EU should withhold a percentage of the 35billion they are paying russia for oil and put it into a special fund for all Ukrainian people displaced by the Russian invasion.

  7. As someone who is hosting the family of a friend… anyone who did this who wasn’t prepared to eat the cost of housing, feeding, and otherwise caring for however many extra people they took in is either naive or deliberately chancing their arm for a payout.

I would love to know more details about specifics here, particularly in regards to numbers.

  8. Ireland is in no position to house refugees. Ireland can’t even house their own people. More efficient would be to send monetary aid so they can be housed somewhere with more reasonable housing costs
