  1. Members of Jacksonville’s LGBTQ+ community and its supporters lit up the Acosta Bridge on Sunday with handheld lights.

  2. Damn that’s a lot of people. Good work on the coordination!

  3. As they should.

    Pride has always been protest.

  4. People often forget that pride is a protest and still is. We didn’t deserve to grow up in closets and the only reason we are rare is because of normalized violence against us for literally no reason other than just because it helps powerful people keep control of others.

No child deserves to grow up in the closet, the amount of stress isn’t healthy for a child to go through regardless of how you feel about us queer folk. But the normalized view of us that you hold is not the natural one. It was upheld by intense violence perpetrated by those you treat as a moral voice over you’re own empathetic drive and humanity.

  5. Governor “White Go-Go Boots” is going to lose his shit!

  6. I’ve never been so PROUD of architecture as I am now.

  7. Is just me or are there fewer displays like this this year? Normally social media is lit up with engagement from companies changing logos and planning events and then the bigots flooding the comment sections. Seems like a fair amount of businesses decided not to make noise this year.

  8. Seriously – it is a rainbow.🌈
How can you hate a rainbow?

True story — we walked into a planetarium that had rainbow lights around the edge. A boy not older than 6 yrs old — shouts Dad a rainbow — WE HATE RAINBOWS!

    Hate is taught.

But, we also teach love. And I am happy to see lights in a rainbow pattern on a bridge.

  9. >DeSantis’ Transportation Department told cities across the state last year that they could only light up bridges at night with red, white and blue lights.

Wait, does this mean the Sunshine Skyway Bridge can’t display the colors of say, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers if they were to win the Super Bowl because of this? While I enjoy my countries flag, colors and all, he’s just fucking pandering to his party as usual.

  10. Florida: Time to ban colored lights in public but only enforce it on queer communities

  11. North Florida checking in; Fuck DeSantis.

As much as Florida’s politics tend to suck overall, we’re not all bad people. Let love triumph over hate! Freedom for all, not just those in power!

  12. He’s putting on his lifts as we speak so he can go do something about this

  13. “rainbow displays pride colors in defiance to gop governor”

  14. Why are conservatives such vile people? It is none of their damn business who someone loves. It is so sickening to me. I bet those nasty people have no idea what love is because they have so much hate in their heart.
    Beautiful bridge! Well done.

  15. Got a building in Downtown Tampa that is lit up for Pride month as well. Was pleasantly surprised when I saw that.

  16. > The group subsequently moved to Acosta Bridge, where they help up colored lights from one end to the other.

Wow. The proofreading at Newsweek is somehow actually getting *worse*.

I just read an article through another submission that had three wrong words in it like this. They are not spelled wrong, so they aren’t getting caught in spell-checkers, but sheesh.

  17. Go to the r/jacksonville sub and help fight the hate brigrading the post on that sub.

  18. I say they should rebuild the bridge to make it slightly curved, so that it’s truly not straight. #TurnTheBridgesGay

  19. Happy to see more positive things happening in Jax in defiance of our idiot governor.

  20. Why? he’s the gayest governor in the US. I live in Colorado, our Governor is openly gay and married to a man, we have a First Gentleman. DeSantis is still gayer

  21. Its wild that they call us snowflakes for being offended when someone is hurt by racist and homophobic rhetoric, yet they are somehow triggered/offended by seeing a certain set of colors displayed at the same time.

  22. Yes! We stand united against hate and always will! PRIDE!!!

  23. Nice.

These prudes spend too much time on the wrong issues. I often wonder if it is really a projection of themselves.

  24. First time I’ve seen Jacksonville mentioned in an article that wasn’t about a shooting

  25. > The activists had been planning to light up Jacksonville’s Main Street bridge in rainbow colors, as they did in 2024, but the span was lifted unexpectedly as they approached, according to local outlet Jacksonville.com.

Ah yes, using taxpayer resources to shut down a bridge to obstruct freedom of speech. But it’s the left that are trying to silence people.

  26. ah bummer … I thought the local government did it.
