  1. My heart goes out to the victims. According to the article 10 people are also seriously injured of which 5 are in critical condition. I don’t understand how this could have happened, aren’t there very strict rules in place for long distance bus drivers?

  2. My daughter was on that bus. Thankfully she is ok. Her friend suffered a broken arm and needs surgery to set it. They go to school in France and were going to Holland for spring break.

edit: Thanks for the comments . She’s doing better physically. She had headaches and nausea but a CT scan showed everything looks ok, no bleeding or fractures so it appears to be a concussion.

I am wondering, as blablacar had covered some expenses but will no longer cover her hotel as they support their friend in the hospital, or provide any reimbursement for lost/damaged property, what kind of recourse I have with them.

They had a meeting the following day with the passengers and blablacar said if they had any further questions, they would need to speak to their lawyers. Not sure how is typical in Belgium if I would have to get a lawyer to help or just accept what blablacar offers and out of pocket the rest.

In the end, her health and safety is what matters, but it is also disappointing that the company doesn’t help out more.

edit edit: Oh btw, she can’t stop talking about how nice the belgium people are : )

  3. I think they already have breathalyzers to start the bus, maybe they should do the same but who tests common drugs… I wish speedy recovery for the victims.

  4. I once was on a SkiKot bus from the Alps, the driver was falling asleep too, it was terrifying. They had 2 drivers but made some kind of illegal agreement and dropped the fresh driver off somewhere instead of him driving the rest of the trip.

  5. >Hij bleek onder invloed van drugs, dat werd bevestigd door een positieve speekseltest.

I’m sorry, but that doesn’t mean jack shit. There are tons of things that make you test positive on a roadside saliva test. Like most ADHD medication, half the prescribed anti-depressants, cough drops, asthma inhalers, poppy seeds, antihistamines, … and the list goes on.

  6. I wonder how many of these we’ll have to see before most people will put on their seat belts when on a bus.
