1. A 42-year-old mum’s benefits were wrongly cut off – then she took her own life. Now, the woman’s own mother has won an eight-year fight for justice after an inquest ruled the benefits cut had, in fact, led to her daughter’s tragic death by suicide.

   Joy Dove refused to let her daughter, Jodey Whiting, die without her true cause of death being revealed. She was vindicated as a coroner found that the mental health of Jodie, a mum-of-nine, deteriorated when her benefits were stopped incorrectly by the Department of Work and Pensions.

   This is what happens when you take disabled people’s only income away, and they’re threatened with destitution. 

   Dismissing her as ‘mental already’ and making derisory comments about the number of children she had are utterly, utterly disgusting. 

   People don’t choose to have serious conditions like bipolar. To be able to successfully parent nine children singlehandedly, whilst living on extremely limited means, whilst simultaneously managing a serious mental illness is an incredible thing. Something that is beyond most people, and no doubt definitely beyond the capabilities of those soulless ghouls looking down on Jodey, as if her life were worthless

7. Nothing shows off how the right wing are just hateful people who aren’t internally consistent in any other way, than when cases like these come up. They’ll go on and on and on about immigration, while also balking at the idea of the great unwashed having lots of kids that they can’t just starve out of spite to the parents – logically you should love British people popping out loads of kids because nothing else will make your little isolationist fantasy demographically viable. But they don’t want to make anything that works, just be free to indulge their worst impulses and be their worst selves.
