What if – hypothetically speaking – the majority in Scotland want one ? Assuming a large pro independence majority at Holyrood next year and consistent polling in favour of independence or a referendum at least at some point during the next Scottish parliament .
Yes there’s the whole “once in a generation” thing , but if the Scottish public don’t wish to wait a generation I’m not sure how he – or any politician- can defend saying no against the wishes of the majority.
You can’t keep having referenda until you get the result you want. Splitting the UK up into smaller and less secure countries isn’t exactly a smart move right now. And after 15-20 years of independence they’ll long to come back. SNP have been consistently unable to govern properly so good luck to them
A lot of people voted no to independence because we would be left out of the EU. The government then dragged us out of the EU anyway.
If Scotland could rejoin the EU without England, make no doubt, they would leave given the chance.
Good, the last thing this country needs is more uncertainty!

That’s a shame. For the English.
Can the English have a vote to kick them out? Tired of seeing the Scots moan about their subjugation from their ruthless English overlords…
I went to Edinburgh last year for the first time in ages to visit friends. We wound up in a dive bar filled with guys wearing kilts non-ironically. There was one particular chap, shaved head, spiderweb neck tattoos, sporran, the full works. He was giving us the eye for a while, then necked down his pint, turned to us and said “are youse English then?”
My spider sense was telling me to gtfo, but then he went on “do you know the SNP?” Uh, yeah? “Well” he said, “I. FUCKIN’. HATE. THE. SNP!” and then launched into a 20 minute rant on all the many reasons why. He just seemed so relieved to be able to talk about, and it reminded me that Internet life is not real life, and that what often appears like a monolith to outsiders is usually anything but.
Edinburgh is a fantastic city by the way, definitely a world class place.
I feel like a lot of english people need to land on a belief about Scottish independence and stick to it because a lot of you are just contradicting yourselves.
You hate the Scots, but you don’t want Scotland to become independent.
You say scotland is an economic basket case, but you still want it tied to England and draining english resources.
The list goes on.
I genuinely don’t see the issue if they vote to stay or leave. It’s up to them.
The UK is a democracy which means voters are allowed the freedom to change their minds.
I feel a lot of english people just need to admit that they don’t like the idea of a part of the UK that they feel rightfully belongs to them going in a different direction.
I know people in 2025 who still have a grudge against the Irish for daring to fight for independence and who still feel Ireland belongs to England. It’s weird, guys.
I would have thought with the rise of Farage and English nationalism that you all would want to get rid of the poor celtic fringe and just have England as its own independent nation. You all make no sense.
